Hi,

I am planning a project for about 20 Boy Scouts. We would like to make our
own woodcarving knives with a blade that is approximately 1" long and 3/8"
wide. The handle is no problem, but I am still looking for an inexpensive
material for the blade. Ideally, the material would be fairly close to the
final blade shape so we don't have to do much grinding. Looking forward to hearing you suggestions. Thanks.

Bob

Are you looking for a blade steel? I'd recommend something like 1095 or 1084. Those steels are good and cheap. Being an eagle scout I can assure you, give a kid a knife that he loves and tell him to oil it once in a while, and he'll oil it every time he uses it.

Sincerely,
Adam

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the forums. I'd love to help. I'm always a sucker for helping young men. I've been in your shoes and know the time you spend with scouts.
Explain a little more about the project. Are they going to file the edge on the shaped blades. How much would you like them to do? What about handle material. Would saw blade steel be good enough. I have several saw blades I could cut into blades for you. Could you post a design of knife you want? I'll do what I can.

John
