Hi all,

I seem to remember that David Boye used to make a folding knife with a short blade with "cobalt" or "carbide" of something else like that in it's description. It had a silver handle and came in 2 or 3 different sizes.

Are there any Boye experts out there that can help me identify this knife?

Thanks,
John

John,
I believe what you are talking about was called the Boye Basic Folder. It was basically (

) a miniature of his Basic sheath knife line with a nickel silver handle that folded over the blade. It worked like a friction folder since it had no springs or lock. It was different from a friction folder because part of the handle was made up of the cast steel part. David Boye calls his cast steel Dendritic Steel because of the branch like patterns you get when the knife is etched. He has branched (

) out recently into Dendritic Cobalt. I don't know if he is still making these or not. I have one that I bought about 5 or 6 years ago that has white bone and ebony inlay with a basket weave pattern along the top of the blade. In all actuality it was probably made by his son-in-law Matt Conable who is now one of the cofounders of William Henry Knives. The Basic Folders work a lot better than one would think for such a short blade. It is also the only knife I own that has only illicited good reactions from people. It is truly a functional work of art. I hope this helps.

Them:"What's that clipped to your pocket, a beeper?"
Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

Hi Paul,

Yeah that's it. I wanted one a few years ago when I saw them on clearence in the Edge Co. catalog. I was thinking I might place an ad for one in the knife exchange... but I could not think of the name.

From what you say it sounds like a pretty sweet little knife.

Thanks,
John
