A local machinery place has a manual 612 for $750 and I'm going to go check it out this afternoon. First off, what are some things I need to look for, is that a good price, and can the motor be changed out on something like that?

Thanks --

That's a bargain price if it's in usable condition.

Lift off the table and check the ways and see if they are lubricated.

The table simply lifts straight up.

Run the spindle and motor up and down on its ways and see if it sticks anywhere.

The motor will run fine with a phase converter.

You're starting to stock pile some serious equipment dude. Pretty soon all you're going to have to do is push a few buttons and you'll have a finished knife ;).

After those folders, I started thinking a surface grinder might not be a bad idea. :D

Thanks for the info Don --- my only problem is that I'm running very low on electricity and I'd want to mount a c-face 110 motor to it if feasible. I'm not sure how much of a pain in the ass that would be though.

What Don said, Michael. Every word. I would also grab the spindle and wiggle it around a bit to see if I detect any play.

The 110v motor is not a bad idea.

Hey jeff, I was going to give you a shout, but your website isn't working (thus no number).

The motor shaft is connected to the short spindle using a rubber 4-finger adaptor. I've forgotten the name of these things. These are common and available. The problem would be finding a face mount motor and adapting it to the spindle housing.

Why are you concerned about using a phase converter? It will run on 220v single phase, and will use less electricity than the same size motor running on 1 phase 120v.

Yep, I know. We couldn't afford to keep it running. :(

my new email addy is in my profile though.

Gotcha -- I think I might debate about picking it up. I talked to John about using a plug on my VFD and I think I could run it on with that. Now to find the money . . . .:o

So tell me -- you guys can't live without your surface grinders right and I should buy this immediately? :D

That is the most important machine that I have other than the drill press, mill and ginders. I have that model and it is a good little machine.

You'll have to buy a surface grinder if you plan on making folders and not loosing your mind. You may loose it anyway but at least your blades will be flat. :-)

thank gents. ;)

Another question -- how does one get a 1200-pound surface grinder into their shop off a trailer?

finesse, a case of beer, and pals. Fly me out and feed me beers and bbq for a week. I'll set it up for ya. ;)

I got beer, but lacking on the finesse part. :D I can send you a paper airplane. :D

I would use something along the lines of a tire dolley. They can support a vehicle they should be able to support the macine. Just lay the macine on 4x4 posts or RR ties. Then us a car jack to lift the machine onto a tire dolley then strap it in. Work smart not Hard! Also, a lot of beer and healthy backs are always good to have around. Just my .02 cents worth.

I am thinking about moving to Springfield :) But it might be a while. I need to get out of the City :( I am going crazy here. Too much hustle and bustle if you know what I mean. Probably within the next year or so. I will look you up when I get there. It would be nice to meet some of you knifemakers in person.

good choice -- Springfield is a great city. :)

The good news is; they weighed it and it comes in at around 700 pounds.
