I picked up a collins boys axe today at true value on my way home. It was 19.95. The handle was lined up properly. The grain was running correctly and I found no week points. The handle was sligbtly rough. The head was blackened and the hole for the handle was properly alighned and even on both sides. I sanded the handle with 220, and that fixed it nice. The head shape is correct as to split the difference between light splitting and light chopping, limbing. My only complaint is the angle of the factory edge. I was aware of this at the time of purchace and plan on fixing that myself. All in all for 20 dollars this was a good deal and a new ax to strap to my pack.

What a great find. It should serve you well for a long time. The current Collins are made in Mexico and the vintage collectors always prefer a Collins from before the Mexico move. But as Peg said, get her set up the way you want her and I'm betting she will work for a long time. Have fun chopping N' splitting.
