BP110 Buying Experience

I was in the Harrisburg PA area yesterday and made plans to stop at Bass Pro on the south end of town. I didn't have a lot of time but I only get there once or twice a year so I 'needed' to stop (I have been wanting a BP110 for some time now).

They had a nice selection of Bucks, including several custom or limited run mini Alpha's in various handle materials. I almost purchased a sweet looking mini Alpha with elk scales but decided to stick with my original plans to get a BP110.

I hit them at a busy time and the guy behind the counter was pretty frazzeled. He was nice and knowlegable but I didn't want to waste his time asking to look at a bunch of different knives. So I just asked for the "black bladed 110".

The first one he pulled out was really sloppy... there was a large gap between the backspring and liner, the backspring sat high in the front, and the blade had a lot of play. So I asked to see another one, which was absolutley perfect. With tax it was $68 and change.

This one is going to be a user, as are nearly all my knives. The blade is marked CPM154, is this the same as 154CM?

Nice one, I was just at a BP and didn't know they had these or I would have gotten one.

CPM154 is a powdered steel version of 154CM, very similar, but considered an improvement over standard 154CM, easier to make and better edge retention.

Geezuz Cheezit TLC...
Now I know ya don't read my posts.

I've been yakking about that 110BP as recent as two days ago:

Here is the same knife after Muskrat worked it for me:

I will state that the talk of the blade return does not snap to my likin'...but I can live with it.

Messy, cool beans on that purchase. It is a beautiful pig sticker :)

Found this thread on CPM154 interesting: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3048294#post3048294
And, TLC is correct, the "P" indicates "Powder".

.

TLC: This is basically the same knife as your 2007 Founders Edition but with a premium blade. The guys here in the forum rave about them along with the Cabelas Alaskan Guide 110.

I really like your Muskrat custom Goose... kinda miss him around here :(

Hey Messy. Here is my BP 110.I have not cut anything with it yet.Wating
on that deer this year.
Good snag on your's
Jeff

Thanks Hawkeye. I can't decide what to carry as my primary hunting knife this year. It was going to be my 889 but then I got a folding Alpha Hunter in 154CM and now the BP110... I can't carry them all! Well I guess I could but that would be kinda weird.

Goose: I had a chance to read that thread on CPM vs CM. Interesting stuff. I wonder why Buck is using CPM on these or conversely why they are not using CPM on all their knives?

I wonder why Buck is using CPM on these?

Probably something that Bass Pro wanted to make their knife "unique"
They have done this over the years, offering very different steel in other models.

conversely why they are not using CPM on all their knives?

Price point probably,
most users don't want or need a different steel. Compare the price of the BP 110 to a standard 110. Most people just want a knife that cuts ;)

don't you have a backpack?? :eek::eek::p

I plan on the pack having a new BP, Cabellas, and maybe a custom shop BG42 this season. Along with various other 110's and a few fixed blade or two. Can't wait for all the hunting reports!!

Good points. What I meant is why not CPM154 instead of 154CM. It may be cost or the post Goose refered to mentioned other differences that be part of the decision. I understand the need for 420HC for cost and user friendliness.

PR: I'm probably going to carry two knives (flip a coin) and keep the others back at camp for skinning and processing duties.

Probably because CPM154 is still a better grade of 154 that Buck does not offer. Bass Pro knives are the only ones I have seen (to date) with the CPM154.
It makes the Bass Pro knife "unique" ;)

Well Messy..I am going to go with Pack Rat on the back pack.Along with
my coffee thermos I will have :D several Buck knives in there.I am still
field testing them you know. Call me weird..
Hawkeye

Hawkeye... you're weird.

:D:D;)

Well,,,he asked,,,didn't he....:D

I thought I was the only one that carried a thermos of coffee to the stand. :)

I also carry the lansky clamp and hones... touch up any edges while sitting there waiting.

I should try this!!! But, then again, I would need to buy more knives to touch up while waiting... and waiting... and.... you get the idea ;)
If I just touched up the ones I have they wouldnt have any blades left :D
