Hey guys!

To all you new Southard flipper owners out there. What are you using for lube, oil or a grease?

I'm currently using Nano Oil (freaking best stuff out there by the way) for all my knives, but wanted to know if there's anyone out there using grease for the bearing system?

I'm thinking of putting an order for some finish line extreme fluoro grease. I want to pamper my new flipper! Lol (that is until the honeymoon is over and she gets put into the EDC rotation to earn her keep!)

I use the CRK grease but I'm sure the finish line will also work well on those bearings.

I'm intrigued about the Nano oil. Would like to try it out, but I got still got a full bottle of bluelube, a little redundant having both.

Currently none, as it's not needed. My knife is about a week old, and the ball bearings should ensure smooth operation regardless of how much lube is in there.

Wow, lot of nano-oil users here. I just tried it today after getting it in the mail, not sure if 'm not using it right....but I only found a marginal difference in my knives.

I tried it on-

Kershaw Speedform II
Spyderco Caly Jr (Serrated)
Spyderco Chaparral Ti
Spyderco Sage

The oil seemed to work best with the Speedform... and I think I ruined my Chaparral by putting too much, coz every time the blade locks, oil residue leaks out from the backlock. Might have to disassemble the knife for clean up now.

That being said, is there something I'm doing wrong here? Because I keep hearing top notch stuff about Nano-oil and I'm yet to be blown away. The performance on the Spydercos wasn't impressive to me.

Same here. Currently running mine dry, still smooth as glass. I've been meaning to pick up some nano oil to try for some time though.

I don't have a Southard but I own several Spyderco's and knives in general.
I use and love Benchmade Blue Lube.
Makes an already smooth knife incredibly smooth.

Currently no lube on my Techno though as it's still pretty minty and smooth as butter.

10 weight NanoOil.

Are you using that Nano Oil? Red? Less is more. Never saturate. Most oil will make any knife sticky when getting on the locking mechanism and tang.

Oil is not needed on the bearing system of the Southard. It should smooth out or stay smooth. Getting even better with use. Maybe some compressed air to blow it out. Keeping dirt and sand or lint out. Oil will make the bearings and everything in the pivot gum up or attract dirt.

I use Nano Oil, although it's not really going to do all that much in the Southard. I've heard that Blue Lube is just mineral oil.

Yeah, I even heard it is food safe to a reasonable degree. Whatever it is, Bluelube has worked really well for me and I have yet heard anyone whose tried it and said anything different. I really want to try the latest and greatest but its gonna have to wait a good while. I got too much lube already hah! Anybody know of samples available though?

According to the MSDS, so is Nano oil.

Any light oil works fine.

I'm using Tri-Flow rather than grease, which seems more appropriate for an open bearing like those used in the Southard.

Well looks like I found my answer. Straight from Spyderco themselves. They use an oil.

EDIT: I guess it could mean a grease too since militec also comes in grease form? I'm assuming they mean Militec oil though.

"We recommend a high end weapon lubricant, we use Militec here."

I've been super curious about Finish Line Fluoro Grease so I placed an order for the grease in the needle applicator. $14 shipped so not that bad.
I'm going to try a heads up with my Nano Oil. I don't think it will better it but we shall find out!
I'll be sure to post my findings for all you guys/gals.

In my experience, ball bearings are generally run in a light grease. Of course, that works with cars okay, where there is plenty of heat and pressure. We don't really have the same animal here in this case. My Southard is dry, like RevDevil's.
