I'd like to be able to make a small sheath by braiding an outer cover around a simple wooden, plastic or leather blade cover. I've searched the net a bit, but have not yet found any ideas or instructions.

Can anybody point me in the right direction? Doc?

I think a braided sheath would help to have a knife classed more as a tool or 'artwork' rather than a weapon (which is a plus when carrying a knife in public).

Thanks..... Coote.

Sailors and others used techniques such as grafting, pointing and hitching to cover different items. I'll see what I can come up with. You would have to have some kind of anchor points on the insert, though, I would think.

Maybe a picture of the insert would help.

Thanks Doc. You've obviously studied the art more than I have. I don't have an insert yet.....but I guess if you could picture something like the plastic sheath that some of the Frost Mora knives come in you'd have an idea of what I'm thinking about.

Anchor points wouldn't be a problem. I could have a hole right through the point of the inserts just below the blade....plus maybe some holes near the top corners, or perhaps some grooves filed/carved around the outside. Glue might help. But perhaps some better ideas may come up. The insert could actually be tapered at both ends....in other words the center portion of the insert could be fatter than the ends with the bottom end being thinner than the top.

Merci pour le email Monsieur Doc. I will look at my inbox.
