Braiding leather for thongs

Junglee has an ad in the knife rags for one of their knives designed by a maker w/ a Japanese name (CRS has struck me fiercely recently) My question is does anyone have a clue how to do the very slick looking leather braid that is attached to the thong holes on these knives. My perception (from the pic0 is that this is more than a sim[ple 3 piece braid.Any pointers greatfully accepted.
