Brainless Hikers !

I picked up a local trendy camping mag a while back and under the light weight hiking gear list there was no self extraction gear.
Not a SAK
Or A box of matches ( it said you don't need them because your stove has a Piezo save weight)
Plastic scat shovel
FAK kit had bandaids asprin and immodium not even a strapping bandage.
Under emergency gear was an EPIRB
Certainly no PSK.
Idiots.
Carl

Looks like there should be some sort of basic skills training requirements set before newbs should be allowed to set out into the wilderness.

Wrong !
Their choice.
Let them die.
The Idiocracy, formerly known as the US of Empire, is finished.
ORrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Give them a fourth mortgage with a 6 month waiver so they can boost the "economy' with a new bass boat.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

They are young and full of piss and vinegar. It's a shame SAR crews have to put their life on the line for naive thrill seekers... but I can't say I am shocked. Kids are kids. I hope this was a learning experience for them. Maybe inturn, they will save someone elses hide by relating their experience.

There... I promised myself not to call them idiots..... doh!

You showed remarkable restraint, Rick.

I'll do it for you: idiots.

id hate to see their bill for rescue......

call me harsh but 20's is hardly young....they want excitement they should start their own fight club.....

but i agree with what you said rick...hopefully their experience teaches others to respect mama nature!

There was a time not too long ago when that type of folly often carried the ultimate price.

Amazing what people will do without to save weight. Got to have your phone so you can post photos of your demise on some social networking site.

I have seen similar list for the ultralight hiking crowd that have no real First Aid gear or self rescue items. Have to keep total weight under 16 pounds.

Nice thing about that is the SAR crews don't have to carry out a bunch of gear along with the deceased.

Yet another round of survival expert finger wagging.

This story doesn't seem to be all that bad. A couple guys go on a hike, get stuck, call for help. Nothing particularly horrendous happens. Sounds like they did OK. Are we supposed to be outraged that they had the temerity to call for help? That emergency crews were called up? Just wait 'til you find out what happens when your house catches fire and call 911.

They were pretty irresponsible if you ask me. They set off at 4PM and climb up
a mountain with nothing ... no food , water or warm clothing then get lost and can't
make there way back down and become stranded ... yeah nothing wrong with that

As a teacher I can say that most young people today lack a sense of personal responsibility (although this is becoming increasingly true of older folks too). They are to used to someone bailing them out when it becomes necessary. Many people bring this attitudo to the woods as well. These hikers are guilty of investing little forethought in what they were planning on doing. There is a big difference between a genuine accident and a shameful lack of preperation.

Every time I see these cases, I have some mixed emotion.
To be honest I, myself was actually one of those idiot hikers.
Fortunately I could survive, I can easily imagine myself involved in serious accident.
Within those reckless attempts I learned something, including that ice ax is not a condom.

I agree for the most part, we don't need the tax payers paying for peoples stupid mistakes. This happened in my neck of the woods, they were out past dark starting at 4pm... sun goes down around 6pm (not too bright) they were unprepared in many ways (No warm clothing, no light, no fire... the list goes on). They ended up wandering in the dark and found themselves on a cliff unsure of which direction to head for safety. I guarantee they learned a lesson. unfortunately it is probably > "Only hike where there is Cell coverage"

I was going to say something in response to will62s comment about packing out gear but it might offend someone so I better refrain.

I bet that those two will either take measures to learn what they need in skills or equipment or they will not go back out into such a situation. Spending the night on a cliff gave them plenty of time to think about ways to avoid this in the future. Glad I never did anything so stupid when I was young. ;)
