Has anyone had success using a brake drum as a forge pot
to heat steel for forging or heat treating high carbon (non-stainless) steel? I thought I saw a post a while back (with pictures) showing such a setup. I thought of trying my hand
at heat treating a couple of 1084 blades and using a brake
drum with a blow dryer to force air into the fire pot.

Thanks in advance,

Im not much help but I saw one too. It was a coal forge and if I remember right it worked very well . Propane forges like most of us use cant have the open top. You may want to check out "Black smithing" You may find more info.

You may want to have a look at Jim Hrisoulas' "The Complete Bladesmith" - Paladin Press.
