Sorry to use this forum as a communications device, but can I get Bram to give me some kind of contact(e-mail, website)to order his videos?

We have the VHS format in this country, so I'll be needing that.

I've been playing with a gunting for some months now and believe that it is really not bad as a self-defence tool.

Only it is not easy for me, personally, to carry it as an EDC. Sticks up too high(great for fast access, but not discrete at all). Also feels like ramp may open it accidentally, but so far has not happened to me.

But it has a great handle and great blade for thrusting and twisting out fast....I don't know how Bram holds it but I'd like the centre scallop to be a bit longer to accommodate my middle two fingers in the forward grip....still is the most secure handle I've felt on a folder.

Also it has the best striking butt I've seen on a folder....rotates nice too.

Don't have to say how strong the lock is...it's enough for me, and better than anything else I've handled.
I'm interested in the kinetic openeing part...vaguely do I realize that it is an advantage....esp close up, maybe not standing up, when you have no time to fool about with your thumb or flick your wrist....fastest way to get blade on the target?

Also how to use that ramp on people...

So many ways to play with this toy, right?

Incidentally, going into small points, if anyone is getting this serious toy, try to get a shiny clip on it. The black clip makes it look just awful. Also, since the gunting sticks up so high, with the steel ramp completely exposed, the shiny clip makes no difference to its discreteness or lack of it.

I guess I hold it a touch differently..but as I have demonstrated to all I can jam it full force into something holding it ONLY with three fingers in forward grip and two fingers in reverse grip and not lose hold, thrust it deeply into something or hit as hard as I want as an impact tool..
In NYC I showed Sal the new meaning of Spyderco..not only Spyderco sharp but Spyderco strong!...BAM!
I put holes in wood tables, banged through doors..
break out glass...I have a good ole time...
My index finger is in the first scallop...
my middle finger is in the second, my ring finger and pinky are on the third..
the knife is held against my thumb mass and palm ..
this means I can ( or could if need be..)actually let go with my index finger and thumb and stil thrust to my hearts content..either with blade or impact..

When I tomahawk..my index finger is up on the bottom curve of the ramp..middle and ring on the next scallop and my pinky is on the persian butt scallop..
My pinky actually makes the snapping motion possible!..

I have had almost no one tell me they were looking @ my gunting..
or that they noriced it..and I wear the red Drone in a RED holster..
I have shiny clips, black clips stone washed grey clips..
flat black clips, black blades, dull grey blades normal blades..
it doesn't matter..
My black clip now has worn edges and un-black screws.. I carry and use it too much I guess..ROFL..

thanks for trying the Gunting..

Steve 22595, Bram, thanks for your replies.

I'll order the gunting videos thro Patti at SFO. They are 4 pieces, abt US$100+shipping US$25=$125.

Even if I don't carry the Gunting as an EDC(I think it's going to need a sheath) maybe I can learn something that I can use with my other blades.

I hope it's correct to say that the videos will concentrate on the using of SMALLER knives as self-defence tools.
Abt holding with the last three fingers, I do that with almost all my knives. I just was not sure what was the best way to do it with the gunting....what was that big first scallop for? I thought it was for you to choke up on the handle, so that the butt is exposed so you can use it to strike after cutting/stabbing.

I thought...wow, here's a folder where you can choke up on the handle, and it's still secure for ramming....then you can strike with the butt.

But if I hold it in forward grip as Bram suggests, then for me, the butt is not exposed and while it is a secure grip for ramming, how am I going to strike with the butt?

Anyway, thanks for your replies....I guess maybe I'll be enlightened upon viewing the vids.

SYK,

From personal experience, I can say without a doubt that you will learn plenty from these videos. Brams' laid back teaching style is very effective. He made some things that I had always felt were difficult, simple for me. The concepts are simple. The difference between novice and pro is largely training hours.

Or as Bram likes to say, "It's not rocket science". :D

SYK:
just tighten up your grip..from fighting grip to a close fist grip..the knife will be exposed from your hand as your hand pulls up the knife..this will give you the butt surface you seek, then relax your grip into a fighting grip and you are set to go..
this takes flexing and unflexing..no physical removing or replacing of your hand..
you squeeze and unsqueeze...OK???
Your palm heel will also give a touch upon impact exposing even more of the butt for striking..

For really tough controlled cutting I reverse my grip..I hold the ramp between my index and middle finger andmy thumb goes into the first finger scallop.
In regular grip I bear down with my thunb on the ramp for extra control..

be well

Toddlers know this common chinese expression...."bai wen bu lu yi jian"....a hundred words can't beat one glance.

Thanks for all your advice, but I think I need now to "see" it rather than read abt it.

In the first grip I talked abt, choked up on the handle, I always felt it was a bit unnatural because there was not enough space for my two middle fingers on the second scallop. Holding it lower down feels a bit better.

Anyway thanks. I have some more questions but I feel that understanding might come more easily to me via video, although I do appreciate the efforts here.
