Brand new 940...edge issue?

Yesterday I received my brand new 940 and immediately noticed that the blade might have a very slightly uneven grind on the edge. Please forgive me if I don't know proper terminology when describing it. Attached is a pic of the blade flat on a cutting board with light shining from behind. You can see that there is a slight re-curve in the edge, near the middle of the blade. It is very slight, and I'm assuming that most people wouldn't notice at all. Am I being too picky? Is no edge perfect? Perhaps this is by design? I could easily send it back, but not if this is just the nature of hand-made and ground blades! Thanks for any advice, opinions.

Many of us do our own re-profiling; it's too common for factory edges to come out of the box with uneven bevels or worse. Seems to be the luck of the draw. Benchmade will fix your knife under warranty, but they shouldn't have to in the first place. It's Not by design, but you'd think it was, and that's not right.

Depending on where you bought it, the vendor may honor an exchange, (and if they're smart they would examine the edge on the replacement...!)

Here's the link to their warranty services page:

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I bought it direct from BM, so I'll definitely contact them and send it back for replacement. For that kind of money I expect pretty dang near perfection.

Am I being too picky?

Not at all. You are perfectly within reason of expecting what was advertised, especially at those prices.

I generally try to avoid buying online these days, so I can thoroughly examine the final product in person. I’ll even unbox three or so and choose the best one based on blade edge bevel symmetry, flat/swedge grind symmetry, centering, and overall finish.

Some dealers utilize a Customer Notes feature during checkout.. You can write down all the points you want them to QC before shipping it off to you.. I highly recommend doing that if its an option.

I have had only two Benchmade folders, and both of them have terribly uneven bevels, definitely noticeably worse than other brands that I have in that price range. I'm not sure if this issue is under warranty or if the company even views it as an issue.

Other than that, these knives are actually pretty good.

hello. I bought my benchmade 940-1 in December of 2015. I noticed the slight "recurve" the first time I tried touching up on the blade on my spyderco ceramic stone. I was disappointed because this curve makes it impossible to completely sharpen on a flat bench stone. I went back to the store, which was an authorized retailer, to inspect the other 940-1's they had. To my surprise, they all had this curve to some degree or another. I then inspected the regular 940's and they were flat. I just concluded that the 940's will be coming like this. So, I bought a spyderco sharpmaker set and I use a single rod as my stone. It still bothers me a little. Im sure in several months benchmade may work out there issues with this, if it even is an issue, and then I will send for a replacement blade under their warranty.

My 940-1 has it as well, I sent it back to BM and asked the blade be replaced, haven't heard back if they are going to charge me or not. I just sent it in end of Feb. I think it's the S90V steel that are hard to grind, I noticed the width of the blade is also a bit narrower than the regular 940. Also the edge angle is not as acute as the regular 940; my guess is it's close to 22 degrees per side; I like my knives at maximum 15 degree per side, was going to take it down to 10-12 dps but it would literally hit the whole primary bevel and become a Scandi grind!?? Love everything else on this knife and as the last resort if BM couldn't fix it, I'm going to swap in the regular 940 blade and still be retry happy with it.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like it's not something that could be considered a serious defect, but I'll see when the knife comes back from BM. It was delivered to them Friday, so hopefully not too long a wait. I also asked to have the blade centering squared away. It was centered on the clip side of the titanium back spacer. I had being this obsessive about details but it's not a cheap knife.

With the existing blade width and the thickness behind 2nd bevel, it really limits your option in terms of reprofile to a lesser angle like 12 degrees per side, I did noted to them to replace with the broadest blade they can find. I also asked to make sure blade is centered. My original came favoring the show side just a bit but after breaking in and small pivot adjustment it was perfect.

Got the knife back from BM today. They replaced the blade and wow...perfection. Unbelievable customer service!
