Hey everybody. My name is Kit.. or Little Mamma, whichever you choose. I'm brand-spankin-new at knife making. I have the pleasure (yeah right) of apprenticing under Indian George out of New Bedford, MA. I'm sure a few of you have already seen the photos on the 'Helen's PCA' Thread in the 'Around The Grinder' forum. Yup... I hadn't even made an introduction and I'm already half nakd on here.. Good times. So far I've made a couple of Cable damascus billets, and at the moment im working on getting the grinding technique down. I'v tried Flat grinds and hollow grinds..and it seems like I'm just STARTING to KINDA get some SORTA hang on it... but not really. As I.G always says, and I'm sure most of you would agree, That is possibly the hardest part. I'm not discouraged yet or anything, just getting ansy to see some more defined progress is all. I think im going to be spending ALOT of time in the workshop trying to get this all downpat, but I'm hopeful! I.G has been absolutely wounderful so far, and really supportive...wich is suprising cause he's mainly an asshole most of the time.. but a nice asshole at that. Besides this I'm also in school.. My EMT training will be done the 10th of december, I'm an active member in the body modification community (piercings tattoos, suspensions, ect.) and i also have a 2yr old..which keeps me busy. Anyways, i hope to talk to some of you guys and maybe get some tips here and there..but besides that, i guess thats all for my introduction. So yeah.. I'm here.. huzzah!

Welcome aboard!

Remember that you need to start pushing I.G. to work on stainless damascus so you can make some nice pattern welded hooks for your suspensions! Over the years I've been somewhat active in the body modification community (much less in the past several years), and I've always viewed those that do suspensions with awe and curiosity. At one point I might have thought about it, but I think I'm too old and soft now (not to mention carrying some extra weight to hold up with those hooks!).

Glad to have you around, it's nice to have a little variety in the ranks around here :)

Welcome aboard, I met you over at IG's a few weeks ago briefly. IG is good peeps :P You've got the fortune to be working for one of the most helpfull individuals I've met in years. That and you have the advantage of having access to his shop too =)

You're learning to grind which is a great place to start! Me... I dont have anything to grind with, but I do have my own forge and smithing tools... so I'm learning to forge as close to shape as possible so that I can hand sand everything else down to shape. must... invest... in... KMG ! (or maybe something lesser to start with)

If you ever happen to be in the Woonsocket area, my tiny little shop is open for you to hammer something out if you want.

Remeber I.G .. if i'm a little shit..Ur a damn HUGE one...stanky at that. Anyways, thanks for the warm welcome guys, i appreciate it. Now remeber fellas..Just cause i got lots of metal and ink under my skin dosnt mean I'm a whack job or nothin'...I was just born a little off. I actually wouldnt mind a set of nice hooks..actually soudns liek a pretty snazzy idea, but Then All the other little shits would want 'em. I've done 3 pulls so far.. two from my back, once from my chest, and im suspensing in New Jersey in january. Fun times indeed... definatly a mind opening expiercing..It's almost as if you enter this higherstate of conciousness. The main reason why i did it was because i didnt think i could. Having a small child, and working with elderly and peopel with illnesses..you really see how fragile the human body can be, but when youre pullin a 300lb guy around by nothin by hooks in ur back and some 550 chord, it's intensely empowering. So... definatly good times.. But onto another topic..Mr. Asshole (I.G) has told me flat grinding is definatly harder then hollow grinding.. everyone agree on that? That was what You started on, Right I.G?...Well figures he takes the assbackwards way, but anyhoo.. How long did it take you guys to get the hang of grindin down?? Like im kidna worried bout it and all.. ..Hmm

Wonderful man, thanks much. I definatly appreciate it. I go up that way sometimes so ill make sure to get the particulars bout where the shop is and maybe pop by one of theese days.

Welcome aboard! I'm still trying to learn to grind decently before getting my own forge. Hope to meet you at one of IG's get togethers next year.

Yep!!! I started on a 1" X42" Sears Belt Sander. Since you think that it is assbackwards you will have a head start in that area.
You got to make two trips when they tell you to haul ass. HEHJEHEHEHE!!

Dan, no dought you will meet her. It looks like she is the pain in the ass grand-daughter that I have never had.:jerkit: I knew my luck would run out sooner or later.:grumpy: But, I was really hoping for later.

......Mr. Asshole (I.G) has told me flat grinding is definatly harder then hollow grinding.. everyone agree on that?.......

Kit, if one asks enough people, you will generally find that the opinion is split. You will encounter poeple who flatgrind with great skill that are all thumbs trying to hollowgrind, and vice versa. There are also different styles of knives with inside or outside curves where one is more difficult than the other. I definitely do not agree with Mr. Ringmeat in this case that one can generalize. ;)

Fatzo??? Just welcome????? Didn't you like her Hi-Heel Shoes?????

Leering was appropriate on that thread, since that was why you started it. Of course I enjoyed seeing Kit in those shoes!

Here, I extend a warm welcome to a newbie knifemaker. :)

heya! i met you at IGs a few weekends back.

I find flat grinding easier. I dont know why....im also a real hand rubbed finish addict, and havent found a really great way to produce a nice even hand rubbed finish on hollow grinds. I despise grinder-finished blades on all but the roughest duty knives.

Dave, you'd like the finish on my first forged blade then (which I'm still finishing up, not done yet) I used a 3x26 craftsman hand belt sander in a vise to get the scale off at 120 grit and after that everything was hand rubbed untill i went to the polishing wheel >_< It's still not as good a finish as I'd like, but I can see my reflection cleanly in each side so I guess it's not bad.

Welcome,Lil'mama-from one newbe to another!
(p.s.watch out for those tattoo'd and pierced folk-:jerkit: )

Welcome , you're EMT training will come in handy when you cut yourself and use George's relish to disinfect !!

Welcome! If you can put up with IG you'll do great. And for gods sake don't use the relish to disenfect wounds, liting off gunpowder to seal the wound would hurt less! Your lucky to get with someone like him, he's always been willing to help and that can be a rare thing in todays world.
