Hi guys,

I'm hoping that someone out there has a solution for this. I've tried all the suggestions given to me in the post I made about this in the Maintenance and Tinkering sub forum. Here's a link.

I suppose I could try sending it back to Benchmade but I would rather not have to go down that road.

Anyone have an idea how I could remedy the terrible off-centered blade? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sorry it's not the road you want to go down and I completely understand but at this point I think your best course of action is to return it to Benchmade for warranty repair.

BM customer service is some of the best around. If you decide to send it in call them first and tell them your problem. Make sure to stress it is a new knife and you had the problem out of the box. They will no doubt take care of you.

Sorry as I know how much it sucks to send in a new knife but sometimes you don't have a choice. I'd do it sooner rather then later so you can get it back and start enjoying your new knife.

Best of luck!

i fixed my centering issues with use and pivot adjustment. but mainly use.
i live across the pond, so sending it in takes a long time, or is expensive.< the wait would probably kill me ;)

I'll give Benchmade a call this week. I'm sure they'll sort it out. I just hate waiting around for warranty repairs to get taken care of. Guess I'll just have to be patient on this one.

I completely understand. BM is pretty good though about getting it back to you fairly quickly but I know any wait time is tough. Just sucks. No other way to say it.

At least you know when you get it back it will be GTG.

I hope it all works out well for you.

All the best!

Going to send mine back as well.
The liners and scales are wearing away.
Like it much better now.

With the knife closed.
I would losen all the screws including the clip screws
Now snug down on the pivot. Not real tight, just hand tight.
I then gently, but firmly, apply pressure to each side of the knife in opposite directions.
Left side up/right side down or Left side down/right side up; while at the same time seeing what combination gives you the desired results.
While holding the right effect, start tightening screws. If the tightening of one particular screw ruins the effect. Tighten this problem screw last.
Once all screws are tight, adjust pivot.

What the gentleman said; with practice it's really easy to adjust these centering issues without sending the knife up for weeks. What KM wrote should be placed as a sticky somewhere because this issue comes up a lot.

UPDATE

I got my Contego back this week.

I'll just clarify that I did try the recommended techniques for alleviating the off center blade, and I am by no means new to tinkering with folding knives.

That being said, I am almost certain that the blade was either warped, had a misaligned pivot hole, possibly a liner issue or something along those lines. I think the fact that they replaced the blade and the liners adequately confirms my suspicions.

Additionally, they replaced the lock springs which made a noticeable difference in the smoothness and ease of lock disengagement.

Deploying the blade is delightfully smooth, without sacrificing any strength or having any perceptible blade play.

All in all, I am extremely satisfied with Benchmade's service and would not hesitate to recommend the 810 Contego or any of their other offerings. I'd say this is one of the best, maybe even the best, knives at this price point.

That's great to hear and thanks for the update.

All to often people will air the complaint or issue and forget to follow up with the resolution. In this case I was completely confident BM would take care of you. Mistakes happen and sometimes an issue will slip threw.

It's how the company responds and handles the problem that is the true measure of their commitment to there customers.

I also agree, the Comtego is by far the best knife I own, or have owned to date in it's price point.

Congrat's again!
