Brand new Vantage Pro pivot screw failure

Four hours ago I pulled this knife new from the box. It's already packed up for shipment to Buck's warranty department. While attempting to loosen the pivot screw, which was shipped tightened down so far the knife wouldn't smoothly open, this happened. It didn't take much force at all to shear off.

I'm sure Buck will make it right, just kind of a bummer.

Mine came the exact same way, but luckily my pivot screw remained in tact. I found that loosening the pivot screw eventually lead to the pivot getting way too loose and the blade making full contact with the liners, luckily it was an easy fix with some locktite. I'm still a bit amazed that Buck still has quality control issues with these.

I'm sending it to Buck on Tuesday. I'll make sure to update the thread when I get a resolution.

That's really too bad. I love the Vantage line and it always sucks to hear about cases where quality control is still an issue.

The knife is still at Buck. It was delivered to the warranty dept. on 28 Dec. 2011. Hoping to see it in my mailbox soon.

And all those 110s and 112s out there still working hard after 30 or 40 years without any adjustments at all.

:D

Yeah. Sometimes a manufacturer hits on a design that is timeless and nearly perfect.. Sometimes not so much.

Bummer. I really like the original vantages, but I'm hesitant on getting one. Honestly, I would pay an extra $10-20 to cover better QC and inspection.

So would I. The thing is, I've had a few Vantage Selects that have been perfect. My Avid had some issues so I returned it, and then this Pro with the pivot screw thing. Seems like the lower end models have better QC. Or maybe the lower end models sell much better, so they are still selling old flawed stock on the high end units. Don't know.

dasmi , don't give up on the Vantages... They really are good knives...my personal experience has been somewhat like yours... out of four Vantages, I have kept two. The others were returned... Some claim to have purchased many and not had an issue...perhaps it's luck of the draw? I also own a Paradigm, which kind of counts... Of the ones I've kept I have found the Vantage line to be an excellent knife.

But.....how long will they last?

Will some mechanical part break at just the wrong time?

I want a 110 or a 112 when I've got a crazed pit bull hanging on my arm.

:D

I'm not giving up on them, it's one of my favorite designs. The Pro is..will...be my third, when it comes back.
