I'm very new to this sub forum. I've been thinking a while as to get a large knife as its what I lack in my collection. I don't like to just collect as I like to use. I don't know much about Khurki knives. I read the sticky notes, safe handling and the whole lot. I'm still confused. As I am new to this style of knife, I'd like to look for the basics. The khurki that can chop and cut, average length, and capable of handling the not so skilled chop in strength. What model should I get? The price? Suggestions for further reading? I've looked at the pics and they look great. I'm just looking for something to start me off in which won't break easily. Call it the virgin khurki.

I'm fairly new to this subforum myself. However I've been using knives and axes for a long time.

For what I do, it seems like the 15" Ang Khola is the way to go....for a start anyway. According to the Himalayan Imports website, this is also their best seller. It seems like a very tough tool that is not too big.

If you haven't seen the Himalayan Imports website already, here is the link:

Enjoy... Best wishes....Coote.

The 15" AK is considered to be the standard utility khuk. It will chop most wood less than 4" in diameter with ease, and can be pressed to tackle wood 8" and up with a bit more sweat;) Generally, they come in weight wise around 1.25-1.5 lbs, so they are hefty enough to tackle most jobs yet packable for just about any hiking/camping gear.

You'll find that HI khuks tend accumulate without you even noticing. Pretty soon, you'll have one of every shape and size for every task (both practical and imagined):D Welcome to the HI forums:)

I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but my first HI was a BAS followed by a WWII. I like the BAS because it isn't too heavy, but still chops well for the size/weight.

Or just a general one stating what makes a good starter khuk. Many people have asked the 'what's a good first khuk?' question.

Maybe a sticky thread detailing which models excel at which types of tasks, replete with a photo of each for the newbies.

All around use for a beginner or wise old turd is a BAS or WWll.
I think this place has too many sticky notes as it is
