I have been looking at the bowie type large fixed blades, and came upon the brass backed Bowie's. I had a theory as to what they could be for, but i really don't know squat on the topic. Could someone please enlighten me?

And was this feature typically soldered on all of them, or has it been affixed in a few different ways over the years?

Thank you for your time.

Let's open this up to a wider audience, perhaps better results will follow...

I've read the brass on the blade spine was so an opponent's blade would slide easily down to the knives guard, when knife fighting. Or, it seems that the brass being softer than steel may catch the blade and allow a thrust with you own, when you push it away.

I had guessed that was its use, but i was inn no way sure due to the weight it added.

As to the second question of how they were attached? Pinned and peened?
