Hey all, I am currently making my first slipjoint, a wharncliff swayback SBJ, and I am using brass liners and bolster because its what I had. I am now ready to choose my handle material and am undecided.

I have several choices, but would like to see your brass bolster knives and the handle material to help me pick a look I like. Something other than the classic 110, more like the old Remingtons in the serpentine pattern are what I would like to see, but if your proud of your brass bolster knife, by all means show it off!

This is my only brass bolstered slipjoint, a Remington whittler. I like it, but the brass requires a bit more work than nickel silver.

The "Grand Dads Old Timer" series was done in brass instead of the usual nickel silver, and matched to black delrin.

Those are great! I have seen a few Remingtons with the brass, your whittler is awesome. By more work than NS, do you mean in maintenance since it is a bit softer?

Bob, those are cool, I didn't know about those. I am not really a collector, so things like that go unnoticed by me. But, that barlow is something else!

Anyone else have any or know any? Any of the local custom makers ever do any?

Sadly, I think brass gets a bad rap because that was the standard for so many years on ultra-low-end knives from Pakistan and China.

Something that might be of help visioning how brass bolsters look against different handle materials, the "Custom Knife" design tool at the Buck website. Pick brass bolsters and drop in different handle slabs to see how they look. Stag, horn, wood.

Bob, thanx for that bit of info, I did not know that existed! I will check it out for sure.

Regarding maintenance, it tends to tarnish more so than nickel silver. Just means you have to polish it up more often. I like my whittler above. Don't see many knives with brass bolsters anymore.

Quite a few European Traditional knives come in brass too, I've French, Italian Traditionals and an English Barlow with brass.

I have an old Friedrich Hartkopf, Solingen scout knife, which has brass bolsters and wood handles.

Looks great!

I can´t find it right now, but it must be here...

Kind regards
Andi

I have a 24OTX with TiNi coating with the same brass bolsters and black delrin very similar to those above. Brass just has that warm feeling. My first Buck 110 was one of my favorites because of the brass bolsers too.

That Barlow is calling to me right now!! All of them as a matter of fact!:thumbup:

I have some old Gerbers in 440C blades and brass bolsters. They look good with ebony scales. You can see photos if you
do a search for the Gerber Sportsman II.

I'll be following this pretty closely, as my first slippie will have brass liners and bolsters, as that's what I can afford right now.

Medic- yeah I did it with brass because it is easy to work with and I had it on hand. I just purchsed some more, so I can try another soon.

I think I have the handle material figgered out but I will wait to show it til after I get it done. It is something different, that's for sure! Should be soon...

Here is one. The brass bolsters seems to work well with buffalo horn scales. I quite like the Remington knife. Are the scales rosewood? That's a traditional combination on Sheffield knives.

Nice shot s-k i have the Barlow version of this Ablett in Stag. At first, I wasn't struck on it (and it wasn't what I'd ordered!) but after fixing it to my liking I'm really keen on it, fine garden knife.

Motto. never give up on a knife with character!

That Buffalo horn does look good with the brass! I have some secret material that is similar to that I am going to try next.
