brass/copper

Phillip is right, from what I've heard brass will just crumble worked hot. Gene Chapman has had good luck forging silicon bronze. It's pretty expensive the few places I've seen it though.

If you are just going to hammer finish it then either the brass or copper will do just fine.
For guards I like to file my slots just oversize before hammering. The material will spread out and close the gap.
Be sure to sand flat the copper/brass that will butt up against the handle material AFTER you have put the hammer finish on the fronts. All that hammering will deform the material and you could run the risk of gaps.

Althought you can't see it in this pic I hammer finished the front of this brass guard. I did have to sand flat the back area after hammering.

Robert,if you decide to use copper, make sure that it's not byrillium copper, spelling?,as that type is extremely poisonous and there is a lot of it floating around.I dont know how to tell it from regular copper.
