Hi
I'm a newbie at knives and recently bought a ka-bar 7" usmc with brass guard, and I was wondering what's the difference between brass guards/buttcap and carbon steel guards/powdered metal buttcap? After all, the brass guard one was "presentation grade" and costs a lot more than the regular ka-bars
Thanks in advance!

Brass is shiny and looks nice. It takes effort and time to make brass look shiny and nice. Effort and time cost money.

Carbon steel can be cut, shaped and powder coated quickly and cheaply—which keeps the overall cost of the knife down.

I hope this helps.

The brass looks nicer, but it's also a softer metal and would show more wear under hard use.
