Brass Oxidation Problem

Today I pulled out one of my Knives from of my safe to inspect it after a few months, I noticed a few dark tarnish spots and used some autosol metal polish which as usual removed it, but to my dismay when i held the area I had cleaned up to the light I found that it had removed the oxidation and tarnish but there was a small indentation (ie pitting) from the area where the oxidation was removed, i checked a few others and noticed similar but to a lesser extent. I use premium grade metal polish (award winning autosol in a tube and or MASS metal polish in a tube.
It took a keen eye to see the pitting as it was very slight but it was their and very disturbing, If I cant prevent this from continuing I will have to consider getting rid off all my brass fitted knives which is almost all of the knives I have before this causes a serious problem. Any help or advice greatly appeciated.
Regards Tim

you might try putting a light coating of oil on them. as you know tarnishing is just oxidation and if you limit the amount of oxygen availible that might help.

Thanks that might help, Ive also purchased a new type of silicon impressed gun bag designed to stop guns from rusting during storage, Ill have it made into something suitable. I never thought of oil on brass, thanks.
Regards Tim

Tim, i use "RustFree", a clear viscous oily substance, a small drop of which will cover both sides of 2 blades. i.e. it spreads.
"contains no petroleum products", purchased from and recommended by A.G.Russell.
i have only been using it for ~1 year and so far it prevents oxidation.
A.G. Russell website says this is how A.G. preserves his knives. i think that a good reference, if indeed correct.
