Are all brass pins the same hardness?

Are there different mixes for brass as there are for steels that would make different manufacturers brass different?

How about color variations?

Thanks,
Dave Evans

there is such a thing as cutlers brass...but for pins....whatever will work...go to a welding outfitter and get pin stock there.. measure it first or if not then after and buy drills that are about .002 over sized.

There are several common brass alloys on the market, yellow brass, red brass, naval brass, muntz metal, alloy 360 and so on. Then there are alloys made for a specific purpose such as engravers brass and several casting and extrusion alloys which are modified to perform well in certain applications. Each alloy has a slightly different colour and newcomers to the industry have a terrible time until they learn the characteristics of each.

I stick to the good old yellow brass because of the machining characteristics and ability to hold a good polish(harder). Some like red brass are very attractive but this material tarnishes very quickly and is rather soft and scratches easily.

Does anyone happen to know the RC hardness ratings of the yellow brass and nickel silver we commonly use?
