BF Members,
Anyone here ever modify brass scales? I'm talking about patinas or any type of modification, that will change the appearance of brass scales. Specifically, I'm talking about the brass scales that come with the Reate JACK.

Thanks for your time and for any info. you can provide.
Stay safe, birdave.

Hi birdave,

Brass, if not finished with some kind of coating!, will react with oxigene and whatever is on youre hands. This will change the appearance of the brass.

I tried in the past to put a greenish patina on some messing part, but have always failed. What will work is darken the brass with either amonia and salt, or boiled eggs in a bag or box. But what you will get is natural looking patina.
Brass reacts really easy and the patina can easily rub of in use. So a desired finish will only stay the same when you put a finishing coating on it and don't use it.

Hope it helps,
Joseph

Joseph,
Thanks yet again, for your help! I do think the Reate JACKS have a coating of some sort, on their brass scales. It's almost a "brushed" look, in that they're not shiny at all. I will keep the info. you sent for further reference. Thanks again, your time and the info. is appreciated.
Stay safe, Joe (birdave in BF).
