brass scratch filler

I've got a knife with a bad, deep scratch in one of the brass bolsters. Is there anything out there that will fill the scratches and still polish easily? Keeping in mind that the only close place around is Wal-Mart, but I am willing to do a little searching if I have to.

I don't really want to grind the scratch out (it's too deep to buff out) because that would have the scale sitting above the bolster. This is a flawless knife aside from that so I really don't want to do anything too drastic.

Any ideas. Thanks.

Sorry, but outside of hard soldering- "brazing" there is nothing that will fill the scratch. It would have to be sanded down. You might try paint, but it will show.

Thanks Bill.

Turns out the scratch wasn't as deep as it looked. It was more of a "tear" than a scratch, leaving the material around the scratch raised. A few different wire wheels and buffing pads on my Dremel fixed it right up. It's not perfect yet, but my finest buffing pad has seen better days, so I'm going to swing by wal mart after work tomorrow and pick up a few more and shine it up.

Are any of the brass protectants worth using? Or is a little Brasso on the general cleaning rounds enough?

Thanks again.

You found the right fix for scratches in brass. Abrasives! Buff that sucker out or live with it. Those are the real choices.

I don't recommend Brasso on knives. It is too abrasive. Try Flitz, Simichrome, or similar.
