I was wondering if anyone has a small piece of brass tubing I could buy off of them I just need a piece large enough to finish off my first knife. I would buy a full length of it but I might be having to move soon and won't have a shop for awhile.

Also, has anyone here used red oak/oak for handle material? While it is a hard wood; from what I understand it isn't as dense as some woods and would therefore need to be stabilized for it to be a good solid handle. Can anyone verify this for me, and if it is nessicary to stabilize it what would be the easiest/best way to do this?

Thanks again for you collective guidance.

Oak is one of the woods that has been used for knife handles for thousands of years before stabilization was invented. It tends to be a little coarse grained but a good oil finish should work well if the oak is dry and well seasoned.

Sorry, I don't have any brass tubing (only copper and stainless). You might try onlinemetals.com.

These are the original oak handles, unstabalized, from probably around the 1950s. I sanded them down, stained them with Birchwood Casey Walnut stain, and finished with Tru Oil. These handles have lasted this long, through storage and countless washings and they're still as tight as new (save for one has a TINY amount of movement).

When I started the project after a good washing and scrubbing with a scotchbrite pad:

Brass tubing can easily be found on eBay in all sorts of diameters.

Bare rib, send me your address, Id be glad to help you out buddy, I got some stuff I can send you,Charlie

You can find brass tubing at many Lowe's, Home Depot etc. A full length is less than the cost of a sandwich.

I've learned that there are app. 80 differend species of oak around the world.
Yes I've worked with it and love the stuff, but it might be quite different then your oak.
If you like you can also fill the pores with oil and sanding dust or something with a contrasting colour before finishing it.

Thank you very much. All I need is a piece of brass tube that is large enough for a lanyard hole at the bottom of the handle. Why don't you e-mail me your address then that way I can send you a self addressed & stamped envelope and a couple of bucks for the brass tube.
