Brass vs Bronze Guards

Anyone have any experience using Silicon Bronze for Guards?

Wondering how it compares to 360 Brass or Nickel Silver for workability?

I've used carbon impregnated bronze for hilts and it's a pain. Very hard and has a tendancy to crack when you set the pins.

I have had guards of my own design cast here at our local foundry. They are nice to work and have good color. I think bronze is better than brass. Go down to your local foundry and ask for some scraps to play with. Ive also had sterling silver poured in the same molds. It is my favorite for guards.

I bought a knife recently from a knifemaker friend of mine that has copper bolsters, pins and thonghole. I bought it because it just looks good. Ironwood slabs dovetailed into the copper bolsters. The copper fittings all are starting to develop a nice patina. It looks cool. Not sure if I am even going to try to polish it up.

I havn't played with bronze much, the little I got is very hard, hard on the bandsaw, drills nice though, and I havn't been able to solder it. Oh well, I have been meaning to get into more solderless gaurd anyway.

It does have a real nice color and doesn't scracth or discolor nearly as easily as brass.
