I just use the steel cups they do great for me.
BTW, I had been using the $5 Harbor Freight ones and never had any complaints, but was strongly advised that I should not use Chinese products such as those as they could be dangerous. The next time I needed one I grabbed one from Lowes made by DeWalt, but it was like $18. I'm using it now, and I can't tell the difference. And when I looked at the fine print, it was also made in China...

I get the Ace hardware store brand 8” wire wheel for my bench grinder. It is variable speed which I think is the best. You can turn it down to leave more patina or turn it way up to get down to bare metal. Mine usually stays on the lowest speed.
