I was hoping some of you would know whether Brasso is safe to polish my Vanguard with. My concern is that it can damage the rubber spacers or ruin the lacquered wood handle overtime.

I've been using Brasso for years. If there's a problem, I haven't noticed it.
Folks say there's better choices, but I've had that stuff laying around so I'm gonna use it.

I would think storing it in the leather sheath would be more of a concern.
Consider wrapping the knife in plastic wrap before you put it into the sheath.
(of course don't store it in an extreme temp. environment).
That would help minimize the green goblin that the leather creates.

Congrats on the little one!
😊

It should also be noted that the handle is not lacquered, it's a resin impregnated laminate (usually made with Birch veneers) called DymaLux (aka Dymondwood). It's pretty bulletproof stuff in what it can stand up to.

I've used Flitz and Semichrome polishing paste to keep the brass shinny, and the handle didn't even blink an eye, getting some exposure to the paste. In fact, if the handle should get scratched, they can be buffed out with a polishing paste like Semichrome.

Also, the black spacers are not rubber, they are a black phenolic resin... and they will also stand up to Brasso and other polishes.

Brasso should be fine on that. But, I’d store it out of the sheath or plastic wrap it as mentioned by GPyro GPyro . You could also oil it really good before you wrap in the plastic or coat it with paste wax/ren wax. When your son pulls it out of the sheath at 15 it’ll look brand new.

After an initial polishing with Brasso, To get the final shine I like, I will use a cotton ball or several, to take the last swirl marks out. Brasso and Army belt buckles.....whew,,,,

Any of yall have a knife that smells horrible? Like an electrical fire? I have a 110 that is one of a few knives I've purchased second hand, and I always felt like the smell comes from something the former owner polished it with. Makes your hand smell like pennies after you hold it too long.

is it dymondwood era one or ebony? regardless I'd give it a good hot water and soap cleaning. dry it off quick, wd40 in the joint and and air compressor everywhere else.....and hope if it's ebony it didn't absorb that smell. dymondwood I wouldnt think would..... id start there though.

let me guess ya already did that didn't ya?

This May bring some comments,,,, but , For years I have snuck my knives in the dishwasher. To include fixed blades and 110's. I do open the blades on the 110's. On the 110's I will do a drop of sewing machine oil on the pivots and work the blade some. No ill effects over the years.

Yeah I will give them an initial cleaning after deer doins,

I had one that had some blade play, an uneven grind and rivets that were uneven.....
I stuck it in the dishwasher.

And it's still useable.
😁

A fun Vanguard story..
Fairly soon after the 192 hit the market in S30V I bought a few of them. The first one I used on a deer I found that me and a drop point just didnt get along. So it got washed up and laid on the counter to dry. The others I sold here on the forum.
So went to get the one from the kitchen counter a day or 5 later and couldn't find it. Figured I had put it back in the deer gear.
But another day or so later saw mom using it cutting up something. She said it was the sharpest knife she had ever used.
So,,,, I just laughed and it has remained in her knife drawer ever since. I did touch up the blade every now and then without her knowing.
It is a rubber handle, S30V, black coated blade, and an IDAHO tang stamp. So about that time it became Moms best knife.

Mom passed on in 2019 and I bought her house from the estate and this Vanguard still lives in her knife drawer. While family took some mementos they wanted, I threatened anyone that tried taking this knife.
A forever memory, watching her use this knife. Present Tense, as it is laying here on my desk as I type this.
Maybe ill put some brasso on it...

Oh yeah,,, I asked her where it had been.... Just stuck it back in the dishwasher every time she used it...

I love it.

Out of curiosity, how's that blade coating holding up?
I'm assuming it's the old DLC coating.

Blade coating has held up fine considering it has been going in and out of that drawer along with other knives over the years with no sheath. a few light scratches.
Thanks.
I'm sure that knife has went thru more use than the average Vanguard has, and it's life would be as good a judge as any for the durability of that coating.

It's nice that you still have that.

I apologize for hijacking this thread. I will get the brasso to this blade..

Black is hard to photograph. I chalked the engravings for visibility. Maybe the few blade scratches will be noticeable
Yeah, as a kitchen knife that the whole family has used over the years it is in fine shape. I used a lansky diamond hones to touch up the blade
