Is Brazilian Red Wood any good for making knife handles? I found a place where i can get some that is made into flooring slabs and 1"x1"x4' turning squares at a good price.

are you sure you mean "red" wood?? not rose wood? I didn't know Brazil had any conifers to speak of but what do I know?? Brazilian Rose wood on the other hand is ledgendary for knife hafting. Real red wood like we have here in the states is damned near like balsa...

regards, mitch

i got a phone number to call about the wood, so i may call and make sure, but the guy i got it from today called it brazillian red wood, and it is red and heavy, it was made into tounge and groove flooring about 3/4" thick.

If you do a Google on "Brazilian Red Wood" it turns up a lot of hits. Apparently it's pretty popular for building decks. Said it weathers to gray.

Massaranduba (Manilkara bidentata) is what it is.
Not a redwood, as in the conifer redwoods in the USA, it is much stronger, harder than oak, and easier to finish. It would be good for handles.
