I just got my daughter an ACR whistle for when we're taking outoor family trips. It came with a lanyard but I'd like to find the "break-away" type, for obvious safety reasons. Any idea where I might get one?

Simple ball chain from you hardware store works well and is easy to use.

You can also melt two ends of synthetic cord together.

Do a search on this site for thread talking about neck knives and how to carry them and you will have more info then you can use. ;)

I took some 1/8 inch nylon cord and made lanyards for my kids' whistles. I attached the two ends of the cord with some thin (#2) polyester whipping twine, then attached the twine to the whistle via the attached ring. The twine has a low enough breaking strength that it's safe for them to wear, and I already had the materials at hand.

I did the same basic thing for my whistle lanyard for lifeguarding. I knotted it up in a twisting spin, and then put loops on the end. I join the loops with ball & chain stuff, the cheepy kind you find on keyrings and stuff. It'd definately break if it ever caught on something. Plus it looks cool enough to pull compliments, so I tend to wear it more often, which makes me more prepaired. .
