Break-in period?

I have two knives, both Benchmade, that have very stiff actions. I've noticed some knives, including the Sebenza, are very smooth right out of the box. I've considered lubing them, but imagine they come from the factory with the correct amount of oil. Will these two become more fluid after they "break-in", or are they defective/in need of servicing?

Yes, they will wear in. The phosphor bronze washers polish in use and will become smoother and slicker.

You may also want to play with the pivot tension. Because of "gravity knife" laws, many makers tighten things up so that the cops won't impound knives.

Which model BM's do you have? Generally speaking any BM model with an AXIS lock should be considerably smoother than one without, simply due to the system's construction. If it is an AXIS with a tight action, then definatly try to adjust the pivot tension.

Thank you for the answers.

One is a Benchmite and one is a Mini-Pica, I believe it is called. I don't think either has an AXIS lock.

I'll work with them for a while and see if they loosen up. If not I'll try adjusting them.

If you play with them a lot, especially infront of the computer, the piviot should be well broken in, in a few weeks.
