Break in the laces, not the boots?!?

Just this day I recieved a pair of Chippewa 25222 steel toe work boots.

I put them on straight away, and found them to be very uncomfortable, and hard to properly adjust, because of the ultra stiff laces they came with.

The problem was obvious, so I just switched out the laces with a "norma" pair of flexible laces, and all is good.

Now, I bought these boots off of ebay, without ever trying before buying.
If I had been in a store trying these things on, I would never have bought them, simply because they were that uncomfortable the first time.

I surfed on over to the Chippewa Boot home and said basically the same thing, and got an immediate reply.
The gist of it was that the factory laces are wax coated nylon for water restistance and they hold up better over time.

Do what? That just seems asinine to me. Who cares about water resistant laces, and being that they are quite cheap, who cares if they wear out in a year or so?

I don't know, I'm sure they have researched this lace thing out, but it just seems like they must be losing some sales on this.
