Since my camera didn't want to work in the field for deer season and I couldn't show you folks the awesomeness that is the HG55 at work field dressing a whitetail I figured a few shots of some venison chop goodness with eggs, toast, and mushrooms were in order.:D

Funny how I started with small knives in the field and have progressively gotten bigger as the years go by. I will say MikeH was right, the HG55 is a bit big for field dressing whitetail, luckily the doe I used it on weighed in at just under 150lbs dressed out so I had room to work. The HG55 is a fighter for sure but it also looks and feels way to good not to be used as a field knife IMO.:)

Oh a little side note on the camera, some of you may recall a post I did about hitting it on the end table a few times after it being dropped in a lake and it started working again. Yeah, this time last day of WI deer season I drooped my pack out of the treestand about 15 feet up. Totally forgot the thing was in there. When I emptied the pack out there it was at the bottom. Turned it on and bang, she's golden.

I suppose I should go blow some snow around, see ya later.

Thanks for sharing...now I have to go raid the kitchen for something to eat, that I'm sure will only pale in comparison to your breakfast.:o

Looks good. Now I'm going to go pull out the elk steaks for supper. What is everyone's favorite for field dressing?

Thanks guys, it was delicious and the calories were much needed today, been a bit chilly out there.

Barbarossa, I think the AD is solid front runner around here for field dressing followed by the Meaner which is my favorite, JM2C.

Hey, I know that guy in the second pictire. He lives in northern Ohio. Likes scotch and cigars.

Man that looks good!!!
Thanks for the great pics:thumbup:

I assume you're taking about Busse knives only, and Whitetail deer.
If you ask that in this room you will get some overly large knife suggestions.

The Cultie is my favorite, and as small as I will go. The ABA is as big as I will go. The thinner AD's and Meaner's are great as well, but I prefer a straight handle for this type of work. The AD is a bit to pointy, but I had Ban take a bit off the blade of one to give it more belly for skinning.

Anything bigger than a BAIII is to big for Deer.. IMO.

I never used a Busse for field dressing deer, mostly because they are too thick.

I think the knife pictured in this thread (HG55) would be good for that, the blade shape looks like a buck knife. The active duty, high street and game warden might be good for deer. The knob creek hack would be good too.

Wow. Now my incinerated chicken ovums and shredded pig flesh disks don't seem quite as appealing in comparison. Good stuff there.

It was good.:D

The chop and shrooms were cooked in red wine, Creole seasoning, and butter.

Back to the deer knife.

I can see how a Cultie would be a great blade for deer duty and If I remember right the BAIII is about the same dimensions as the old school Howling Rat, I've used the HR a few times and it works great.

The only reason I go a little larger sometimes is to whack out quick shooting lanes and make quick ground blinds on areas that haven't been pre done. I find that a heavy 5 to 6 inch blade is a decent compromise to get it all done without carrying around two blades, I bring enough out with me when I leave for the day.:)

Yep, I've done the same thing many times. When I picked up an HG55 at Blade my first thought was that it would make a great hunting knife when you might need to do some camp chores or brush cleaning. It has the old classic hunting blade shape, and the choil would be very helpfull for game.

Ken44, that was my first impression as well and was affirmed this year. The SJTAC had the roll but the HG55 has taken it away.
I'm on the list for Rainwalker to get a tooled leather sheath made up for it.

There will be pix.:thumbup::D

Thanks Helle, I was trying to decide between a HG55 and a Meaner. I think I will be a true HOG and get both to add to my GW.

Barbarossa, your welcome.

As for adding to the GW.

That's the spirit, OINK, OINK

They're both great knives, you'll be happy in the mud.

Welcome to the madness.:D
