Breaking glass with a SAK

Let's say it's an emergency situation and you need to break a car window, but all you have with you is your SAK.
Which tool do you think could break it? (not counting the Vic Rescue Tool's glass breaker, of course)

I'm thinking the Awl has a good shot at shattering it, but how can you hit with enough force to break the glass and keep your hand in a safe position?

Anyone ever tried? Or have some glass for experimentation?

If I'm in a position where I need to break car glass with my SAK, keeping my hand safe would be my last priority.

I would probably just grip the closed SAK in my fist with one end sticking out, and hammer it.

I would use the small key ring end that sticks out just a bit, failing that you can use the safety belt buckle if you have enough room to swing.

you can always wrap your shirt around your hand to get some protection. i think the SAKs best "tool" is the eyelet where the keyring is attached since it sticks out at the end of your SAK, allowing a tight grip, and it's fixed, so it won't fold on you, injuring your fingers like the awl.
look at professional glass breakers at the market: they're not that pointy, so that little eyelet should work just as fine. using the awl might work, but it will probably also ruin your awl. a philips head should do the job as well.
another tool that i could imagine working is the cap lifter fixed at the 45-degree angle, using the SAK like a small hammer, allowing to keep your hand out of the danger zone.

If I'm in a position of needing to use my sak as a glass breaker I'm not going to

1) Be worried about ruining it

2) Have time to wrap my hand

3) Care if I'm cut as more then likely my lifes in jeopardy already

I'm beat the hell outta the window and hope to live no matter what I have to do to do it!

I wouldn't use the key ring attachment projection. I think it's an extension of an Aluminum spacer plate. Too soft to break glass.

A SAK is not really the right tool for the job. Better to have a dedicated spring-operated punch, like a Res-Q-Me, which is not expensive and can be placed in your car for just in case. If all you have is a SAK, by all means use it, but when they finally haul your sunken automobile out of the riverbed, most likely your corpse will be found clutching it in your lacerated hand. How sad :( .

I did this once before, I had an opportunity to break car window and I wanted to see how the SAK handled it. It was my trusty Spartan model. I uncoiled the short lanyard I had on it and swung the whole damn thing at the window like a mace.

It worked.:D

That would be my answer. If you had it on a lanyard, you could swing it.

If your in water how do you plan to do that and also what if the vehicle has power windows?

Power windows will still work, most likely. They did this on mythbusters, and my brother is an ASE mechanic, and he says the windows will still work, unless it's a prolonged immersion. Personally, I try not to crash my cars into rivers or lakes.
