My son’s girlfriend is safety conscious and has just completed a ladies personal protection class that, in addition to teaching about guns and their proper use, went into using knives for protection. She knows that my son always has a knife on him and stated she would like a knife to carry in New Orleans while at college. They are both too young to apply for a concealed carry permit for a handgun here in Louisiana. It isn’t uncommon to have young ladies scooped up off the street, raped and even worse, when they unwisely go into not such a good night. Knowing that she may not get something good to carry, I broke out one of my knife roll ups and looked for my first Spyderco that I purchased, an original FRN Delica SE. I gave it too her as a loaner to find out if she likes it or not. She is quite clumsy while trying to open the knife, but she will have it to practice with. I am trying to steer her toward a Spyderco of some type and can’t think of a better use for an old friend than to break in a new knife user.

I’ll let everyone know how things go with this endeavor.

Good job on the loaner. With the things having been taking place in Louisiana I think it is a good idea. I do now know what the knife laws are in LA, but I would imagine they allow for a larger blade than the Delica. If they do I would want a larger one, but that is a personal decision. Better a Delica that she always carries than a Chinook on the dresser at home. What about the Lil' Temperance? I have been eyeing them lately. Great lock, good looking handle. Small and effective and a "friendlier" handle color. Good luck. Also, encourage her to learn all she can about the use of a knife for SD and practice what she learns.
