Breaking or wearing out a sebenza?

Although I do like collecting, for EDC use, which lately will be the primary use, I kind of just want one knife, the constant buddy I can rely on and feel proud to carry with me if you will. Sebenzas like busses were always out of the question for me, but lately I got some money I intended to blow, and was considering buying a few knives. But I just couldn't decide which ones really SPOKE to me, I liked them all, wanted them all, but couldn't convince myself why I HAD to have it. I have always thought the sebenza an attractive knife, but it was just way too far out of my price range. Now I have a certain ammount of funds I set aside as disposable that would just cover a plain Sebenza and a sharpmaker.

My biggest concern though is wearing the darn thing out, I can handle if my bench made takes a dive, but if I broke my Sebenza I would be beyond mad. I don't baton, throw, chop concrete, use my knives as a prybar with some exceptions, but I want my knife to be able to handle carving sticks, aggressively cut cardboard etc. and have the lock and pivot survive the occasional waist high drop onto wood or dirt. I also for example used my benchmade griptilian to pry/cut a copper shard out of a tree yesterday.

My question is, will the sebenza, under those conditions, which would be fairly seldom, survive at least 10-15 years and still feel like a high quality knife? I can afford to use a sebenza, but not by a new one every couple years. Primarily what I am worried about is poor locking or blade play that can't be fixed buy a factory tuneup.

Finally, my benchmade full sized griptilian just feels a little too big in the pocket, not sure if its the thickness, or the length, or maybe a combination, but I wish I could shrink it just a little. It fits the hand well, especially for harder use, but it rarely gets carried just because unless you wear baggy pants you know its there. I liked the kershaw skyline for size, and it appears is even a bit smaller, which may be a tad too small. The large is a bit more money, I have long but fairly thin hands, which would I be happiest? Primary would be used for opening stuff but would get the occasional hard use as mentioned

The large 21 is very comfortable in the hands and is slim in the pocket for it's size. The knife is very capable of handling being dropped, hit, etc. My large is pocket worn, scratched a little, but it is being used for a work knife and will serve me in that respect unless I lose the knife somehow.. I bought 3 sebenzas in this past year. They are all excellent and feel like they were meant to be used..I highly recommend the isingo blade shape.. very easy to sharpen, and has Excellent cutting power

Going to wait a couple days, as originally I going to trade in a gun for a ruger gp100 revolver and buy some ammo, if I can't find one local who is willing to trade, the knife is mine :D

I use my small Insingo hard all the time. Not abuse but scraping with the back swedge, cutting out caulking around our showers, cutting wire, aluminum cans, and the worst.... Really hard pressure splitting acorn squash. It's been used in the kitchen, shrubs and dirt for yardwork, and cut open many cement bags. Sure, it does become dull but after a cleaning and a touch up it is back to perfect.

Lrg 21 here.
Rock solid lock up. Has not budged . Easy to clean and take apart. Smooth and makes me happy,
It will last many many years if you respect it.
The steel takes an amazingly uniform and razor sharp edge. Lock up does not budge no matter what I cut.
It is 1 1/2 years old and is like new besides the wear on the TI-finish which I love.
Just always makes me :D and feels so

Yes it should last. There are owners out there that are on their 3rd blade and the knife is still going strong. It takes a lot of use and sharpening to use up a blade. All parts are replaceable if you ever need it-usually just a new set of washers if you need anything at all.

There is a earlier thread that talks about having their Senenzas for 10 plus years and sending them in for work. Wish I knew how to copy, post . Just go be a couple of pages on the CRK forum and you should be able to find it.
I feel the choice for a all around carry every day, chore handling, will last a long time is the CRK. They've been putting the sebenzas out for 25 years now, not a bad track record at all.
Good luck

Nice to hear, now just need to decide what size to get, the small sebenza is just small enough I wonder if it might be too small, I actually think I like the styling of the umnumzaan a little better than the large sebenza but it is more money, just depends, I do wish a place within a 100 mile radius actually carried them.

i am sure it will handle being drop and will be fine. the main reason i dont edc mine is i am afraid to lose it. i am on my third delica.

If you are wondering if the small is too small I would get the large assuming you carry without restriction where you live. Either will last a long time with daily use. Use the ultra fine stones on a Sharpermaker to touch up edge and the original blade will last years. I think a Sebenza & Sharpmaker combo is an ideal way to spend some disposable income. Good luck!

If only I had my original sebenza that I bought in mid to late 90's.
If only I had every single CRK that I have purchased over the years.
Sold most...Lost a lrg regular with BG-42 many years ago.
I'm sure they would last a lifetime given proper care..Have never broken or had one wear out..
Never was one to "flick" the sebs open. Some people do this thousands of times while doing brainless activities like watching TV..
.I'm sure that causes premature failure in some cases..

I bought my first CRK online, but once I got it and held it, I knew it was a winner. I have only one zaan and I absolutely love it. The 25 is also an excellent choice, I have 3 of the 25's and numerous 21's in both large and small. my first was a large, didn't think I'd like the small since I had other knives the same size until I had one in hand. I carry a small in my front shirt pocket. I have also gotten used to carrying my large in a pocket sheath as opposed to using the clip, also for fear of losing it. Sometimes it's a pain to carry in a sheath, but I figure the peace of mind is worth it. I'm sure whichever model or size you choose, it won't be your last.

Tell me about it. I was convinced the small was going to be the perfect choice but I am beyond thankful I ended up with a large. I'm sort of small, medium hands, prefer the smaller profiles for my daily carry, but the large just feels so right. They do have a slim profile and the wonderful pocket presence can't be stressed enough.

Back to the original question... even if you were somehow able to "wear it out," all you'd have to do is send it to CRK for spa treatment and/or refurb, and she'd be good to go for another 20 years! Easy as that.

This was one of the big appeals to me in owning CRK. What exactly is performed during the spa treatment besides sharpening? Just new washers and lube? I think some believe that you can get the handle reblasted and blade retumbled for $35 and have a brand new knife, but aren't these separate charges?

Don't know where you live, but have you checked the list of CRK dealers on their web site(contact). They have a lot of dealers.

This is the answer. I've posted this before, but I had (still have) a 1996 small Regular user that developed lock play after more than 15 years of use. Sent it back, good as new, no charge.

I carved a spatula out of a slab of pine with a small 21...(the yurt we were staying at didn't have one.)

I EDC that one, too. It has never had a problem, and I only have to sharpen it every few weeks.

Whats to wear out? How many tens if not hundreds of thousands of open/close cycles will it take to actually wear the Sebenza bushing to the point where it needs repair? And if it does, send it in and I can guarantee they'll be happy to fix it if it is real wear and tear.

Yes, I suppose you could manage to drop it in such a way the blade breaks but that is really, really unlikely too.

It's just two hunks of titanium and one of steel . . . how you gonna wear that out?
