Breakneck Ridge is a classic Hudson Valley hike, and probably one of the steepest hikes you can do anywhere without roping in. It's on the east side of the Hudson, just a few miles up from the Town of Cold Spring, and directly across the river from Storm King Mountain. It's a tough hike, but the views are good and who doesn't like a good workout.

It starts straight up and just keeps going for about an hour of hand over foot climbing and rock scrambling. There are multiple routes you can take, some of them requiring technical rock climbing moves.

I met up with this fine lass and lets just say we "hiked together for a bit." Wink, wink, nod, nod.

Here is the hill profile for the first 1.5 miles of the hike,

and a picture I took of Breakneck from across the river this summer on Storm King Mt. If you look closely, you can see the white markers indicating alternate, less exposed, routes up the Ridge.

Approaching the first of many views.

Looking across to Storm King.

A freight train rumbling past the base of Storm King. Talk about a plum route.

A rock along the way.

Looking down one of the harder parts of the trail.

The view south down the river with West Point on the right. You can still see the freight train.

I used these to make a walking stick after the major climbing was done.

Gearing up for Rescue Riley's November Skills thread, I practiced my firesteel skills on some dry grass I used as tinder.

Wow that looks like an awesome hike. The name is a bit unsettling though :D

oh man! I am SO ready for some color here! We are still a few weeks away from the good color...but those are some beautiful shots!

I grew up in cortlandt manor, not too far south of cold spring. I still have yet to get up to breakneck. Ive been meaning to for years now. One of these days..

When did you hike up there? If it was on Sunday afternoon, I might've been over on Storm King looking over at you. Awesome photos. Breakneck is definitely too daunting for me.

I was up there early Saturday morning.
Don't sell yourself short man. Storm King ain't exactly a stroll in the park. You should give it a try.

Great pics beanbag. Being in Ohio, all these pics that are posted on here are like a little mini vacation for awhile. Health issues with the wife cut the outdoors short this year, but we are making plans already for next year. Keep posting all you have, & thanks again.

Great pics beanbag. That is one of my families favorite Hikes. My boys love it. My 13 year old is trying to get a scout trip to hike breakneck and visit west point and my 8 year old loves climbing the rocks.

The Hike is challenging but a lot of fun and there are alternate routes for all of the exposed or really difficult sections.

We hiked breakneck in late summer and your pics really bring back the memories.

It is a great family hike and the alternate routes make it doable for most any reasonably fit person.

My son has done it a couple of times. Here is a picture of him and a friend on Breakneck taken two years ago when he was 9.

Would it be a good idea for me to pick up NY/NJ Trail Conference maps before I do the hike, or are the trails pretty obvious?

Wintermute I think it is always a good idea to get good maps. Last time I was there they had maps at the trail head. The alternate routes are not on the map but are usually very short but well marked detours.
Have fun and good luck.
