Breakneck Ridge is a classic Hudson Valley hike, and probably one of the steepest hikes you can do anywhere without roping in. It's on the east side of the Hudson, just a few miles up from the Town of Cold Spring, and directly across the river from Storm King Mountain. It's a tough hike, but the views are good and who doesn't like a good workout.
It starts straight up and just keeps going for about an hour of hand over foot climbing and rock scrambling. There are multiple routes you can take, some of them requiring technical rock climbing moves.
I met up with this fine lass and lets just say we "hiked together for a bit." Wink, wink, nod, nod.
Here is the hill profile for the first 1.5 miles of the hike,
and a picture I took of Breakneck from across the river this summer on Storm King Mt. If you look closely, you can see the white markers indicating alternate, less exposed, routes up the Ridge.
Approaching the first of many views.
Looking across to Storm King.
A freight train rumbling past the base of Storm King. Talk about a plum route.
A rock along the way.
Looking down one of the harder parts of the trail.
The view south down the river with West Point on the right. You can still see the freight train.
Bannerman's Island, a Revolutionary War ammo depot.
I used these to make a walking stick after the major climbing was done.
Gearing up for Rescue Riley's November Skills thread, I practiced my firesteel skills on some dry grass I used as tinder.
Obligatory foliage shot.
Thanks for looking.
