Picked this up for $8 recently. Nice profile and maker's stamp:

Cleaned up with wire wheel:

Hung on a 28" boys axe handle from "Do it Best" hardware:

A sweet profile on this one. Thanks for looking.

That's a real looker, Chris. Nice work on it! She's got some nice curves....like my...street...?

Well. the wedge popped out partially. Found it this morning. Will post a pic soon. Never had this happen to me.

Sweet find, good job and a great looking tool right there. I look in every junk shop and flea market for a good boys axe, no luck yet.

Sometimes what people are selling as hatchets are really small axes that need to be re-hung.
Hope I don't find any today, that would just be more work. But it's hard not to look.... :D

That is a very good point. The tip off I suppose would be the eye?

Here is the pic. I did a bit of chopping yesterday and came in this morning to find it like this.

Wondering if I should drill it out and rehang it.

Looks like you might be able to just pull the wedge out and save the handle from a drilling, if you want to keep it intact. Not sure if it's necessary to redo the hang, but it seems pretty likely. Perhaps dropping the head a little lower on the shoulder and leaving the top of the handle a bit proud, with the wedge.

I'm curious to know if you coated the wedge and kerf with BLO before wedging it in? Or is it just wood on wood contact?

Time for some DPG, Chris.

With that axe I'd try just driving the wedge in deeper. Do you have a scrap of 3/16" thick steel stock that you could use as a punch? Or maybe a suitable bit of hardwood to make a temporary punch out of?

Well, this axe works do darn good to live with a half-assed hanging. So.. i drilled out the wedge:

used an old handle (great re-use by the way) to knock the head off:

cut the kerf a bit deeper; rasped, trimmed, and spoke shaved more off the shoulder and handle; seated the axe further down; used swel-lock (sorry Peg, I splurged for the brand name); drove a larger wedge home (note blue specs from painters tape holding my wooden mallet together):

edit: I did notice gaps on the bottom eye between it and the handle before. These are all filled in now that it is seated lower and a larger wedge is in (i think)>
