So I'm now into my 5th month of using my Breeden Woody as my main knife. During all this time it's carved, whittled, split, chopped and scraped yet needed nothing more that a strop on the bottom of a coffee cup to keep it sharp.
So imagine my horror the other day when after it's meeting with the coffee cup I gave it the regular arm hair test and it barely scraped the hairs off !
I grabbed my folding pocket sharpener and ran the knife along it very gently twice on each side, I then gave it the arm hair test again, this time the hairs flew off quicker than using my Mach3 !!!
So after 5 months tough use I have to run it not once but twice along my sharpener to restore the shaving edge.......C'mon Bryan that's not good enough buddy !!!!
Even though in July my ' 6 month one knife 'experiment will be over I'm definitely gonna take this knife on my trip to the rockies, I just have to decide what bigger knife will accompany it !
Anyway with the knife once again shaving sharp I headed out this morning with the dogs.
It had rained heavily all morning but had now slowed a little, perfect to try out some wet weather fire lighting.
I spotted some tinder fungus~
I hit it with some sparks from my ferro-rod~
I then scraped some Cedar shavings using my Breeden~
Now here is a tip for ya. From my own experience I've found that unless the Cedar is totally dry you could struggle blowing it into flame. What usually happens is that you blow the fungus into a crazy red hot ember that eventualy burns away to nothing leaving the Cedar un-lit !
So my tip is once you have placed the fungus in the Cedar nest leave it to smoulder for a few minutes, this way it quickly dries out the Cedar~
Now when you blow it the flame should be instant !
With my practice over we headed to the swamp area~
Snicker was exploring straight away~
I found the half eaten remains of a Newt~
All four legs and the tail had been left !
Maisy was straight in looking for sticks !
This was the one she bought out !
One wet dog~
As we headed back to the parking lot I noticed all the Vanilla leaf was sprouting, rubbed on the skin this makes a great Mozzie repellant !
