Guys I have the opportunity to purchase one of these for approx $120usd. This would be an on line deal - ie I can only go off the seller's description and photos.

The catch is that someone has aparantly tried to sharpen the swedge. The marks left are not bad really. The steel must be hard because they didnt get far!

My question is (straight up - I have zero experience) are these a good, sturdy knife - what do they compare to today? Same league as a sebenza? Forgive my ignorance.

Are there fake versions of this in circulation?

I am told they are desirable / collectable / well thought of.

As this is probably going to be an edc rather than a collectors piece because of its condition.. would money be better spent elsewhere?

All and any comments appreciated by me, the Benchmade noob.

They are desirable in part because it's hard to get a Brend designed production knife. If I remember right Woodard, Boker, Benchmade, and Microtech are the only ones who have made production knives in any significant quantities with a blade of his design. Of those, only Benchmade and Boker made manual locking folders with his blade designs.

The Combat Talon Benchmade 600 is one of my favorite designs ever to come out of Benchmade so I'm biased, but I would say to buy it if the marks on the swedge aren't too bad and the rest of the knife is in good condition.

it's a BM classic, one of their first releases. There was also a Talon 1, and it was designed slightly different.

This specific one, the 600 would be a great LE if done with some CPM-M4 or even S30V. I'd absolutely buy a couple of them.
/Sigh

Right here we go... looks like it will need a birthday, but theres no denying it's a classic. I have sent an enquiry to Benchmade to see if they would consider refurbishing the knife. Otherwise I will do it myself. All comments and suggestions welcomed.

Good photos. Your knife is well used, but very clean. The only angle not available is how much lockup there is. With a good factory edge and servicing, a trip to Benchmade would be a good option if you're not handy with sharpening. I dunno if this could be compared to a Sebenza, as they're very different by design; let's say that your knife after cleanup, and put to use would make for a great companion in EDC chores.

I always forget to remember that I want one of these, until I see one again. Big fan of the older offering from BM. Field a 970 regularly as well as a 913 and a 910, Ive come to trust and like liner locks very much, something Id never thought I would, BM does (did) them right.

These Brends are some of the sexiest, simple and reliable ever. Nice find. Are the liners on these Ti or steel?

I would send it in. Call ahead, check if they have replacement blades, either way, they will replace parts and hardware. They wont do much w/ the scales, however they should be easy enough to refurb yourself if desired, although they're kinda cool w/ that honest wear and patina.

Again man, nice get. And thanks for reminding me to remember to add this to the "Hunt" list.

That makes at least two of us. This model has eluded me for years. The 1991 catalog lists the liners as stainless steel.

S.S... Thanks , Joe.

Yea, these are so nice. I think there was a G-10 offering from BM as well. Ive seen some models w/ a really deep hollow grind, not sure if they were the collabs or Brend productions.

Guys thanks for your comments. The knife has not arrived with me yet - these pics were taken by the seller. He assures me there is no play in the blade whatsoever on lockup. It will be very interesting to hear what Benchmade have to say in response to my email to them. I expect I will have the knife in hand by the end of the week. I'd quite like to make some g10 scales for this one. Is there a good source for g10 someone can recommend?

Just so you and I have an idea of how close Walter's originals are in Benchmade form; here's a nice set of photos:

...enjoy!
