Great looking knife RDFinn. Bret makes a fine knife, folding or fixed. I have a chef's knife in Bjorkman twist, awesome steel. I have been using Damasteel for years, holds a nice edge and easy to sharpen up. Congrats.
In a couple of months my name comes up on his list and he is going to make me a Lanny's Clip with the Damasteel Bjorkman Twist and the Honduran Rosewood Burl. I bought a 1 foot long piece of Damasteel by 1 1/2 wide and a block of the Rosewood so there would be enough left over for the Lanny Clip. He is going to make the Lanny Clip with the Damasteel blade and back spring steel so the back spring would have a little contrast against the SS liners.
As I said earlier, I'm not a huge collector of custom knives, but I try to save my money and buy the nicest stuff I can afford on the ones that I do have. I have 3 nice slipjoints right now from Bret and a couple of fixed blades too. I also have owned several nice fixed blades from Rick Menefee that are beautifully made as Rick is also quite talented with slipjoints and fixed blades. This particular fixed blade from Bret was a proto in that I asked him to make a drop point using the handle from his semi-skinner and adding a 3 1/2 drop point blade profile. According to Bret it has become a very popular pattern request and it got named the " RF Hunter" (my name is Roy Finn) just because when he made the blade, he marked it RF Hunter just to keep his orders organized. I got a hankering for a Damascus fixed blade and after looking at a ton of patterns from all the top makers, I just thought this Damasteel was the nicest looking all of the various patterns from guys like Thomas, Nichols, Alabama Damascus, Hanson and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head. I ordered a long piece of Bjorkman Twist so that I would have enough for the fixed blade and a Lanny Clip that will have a Damasteel blade and back spring of Damasteel and enough Rosewood from the block that I bought for both knives. Right now I have 3 slipjoints from Bret and a couple of RF Hunters and I have several fixed blades from Rick Menefee too. Here's a few pics from my small collection. One last note. The guy I got this Honduran Rosewood from is Matt and he has a website and an ebay store, exoticburlwood.com, with a great selection of scales and blocks. His store has all kinds of beautiful wood to choose from and he is a straight up guy to do business with. If you're looking for something for a special project I'd highly recommend you give him a look.
