Bret Dowell & Rick Menefee

I got bitten by the custom/handmade slipjoint bug a couple weeks ago and this is what I have to show for it... I ordered the Dowell as a gift to myself to celebrate a career milestone. At first I wanted his 2 3/4" Dogleg pattern with natural Canvas Micarta, but then changed my mind. Interestingly, a week later, Rick posted this natural Micarta, linerless Dogleg Jack shadow pattern and I had to have it, too. I found out later that Rick and Bret are good friends! As a short review, the craftsmanship on both is top notch. I love the asymmetrical, kind of rustic shape of Rick's, and Bret's Dogleg is TINY, which is perfect for carry at work in my dress pants. Rick's is a bit of a nailbreaker, but there is enough blade showing when closed to open it with the pinch method, so it's not a problem for me. Both knives are great and these won't be the last knives I order from these gentlemen!

Great knives and pics......thanks for posting them.

I have one knife from Bret Dowell and two more on order. I don't have anything from Rick Menefee yet but he's on my short list. I have too many customs on order right now but once I get that sorted I'll order a something from Rick Menefee.
 
bret is a very good friend of mine. we have worked in the same shop and in the field together many times. we both grew up in the same part of the world his mom was my school teacher (she never busted me but had it done) as my mother is also a school teacher. both of us have two daughters. we hunt, fish, trap and make knives. what else is theyre in life.
 
I have a shadow trapper coming from Bret later this week.

That Menefee is a hoss :)

Nice choices Chiro.

I picked up one from Rick a few weeks ago and could not be happier with it. He really does a great job in all aspects.

Now I have to put another guy (Bret) on my shorter list. :D.
 
I just got my shadow trapper from Bret, linerless and weighs 1 ounce. She turned out great. I'll post some photos later....
