Let me take this opportunity to showcase a recent addition to my collection. For some time now there has been alot of good things to be heard about Brett Gatlin, both about his potential, and also about the current high standard he is realising. So when I saw a piece of his coming through on one of the top dealers, I contacted Mr R and told him I needed to see what all the fuss was about.
As a result I have recently taken delivery of the knife pictured below. What I knew about it was that it was a Maple handled bowie, nickel silver fittengs, and a 10" blade forged from 1084 steel. When I picked it up however I was instantly struck by just how purposeful a piece it is, and whilst being light and quick with excellent handle ergonomics, it is also weighted slightly to the front with the balance point being around the "GA" of the etching, implying, to me a usefulness at chopping also. To my delight, when I contacted Brett he informed me that it was actually a bowie he had made up for cutting demos which he had cleaned up for sale.
This confirmed to me my first impression, what I had here was a dependable, classic bowie whose strength stemmed from a combination a simplicity of design, superior workmanship, first class materials, and a firm nod towards function and reliability. So strong was this impression that I have tried to capture the essence of this piece by placing it along side a couple of other classics that I know I can always rely on:
Cheers,
Stephen
