Not really, but check this out: (My apology for the two extra large images this time - I hope the enhanced visual detail compensates for any inconvenience.)
Brian's treatment of Ron Lake's engraver's playground tail-lock folder is wonderful to behold. Note the recessed gold toothpick concealing the artist's mark: B.Hochstrat
Over several days in my studio I came to really appreciate the edge patterns running around each half of the handle - very nice. Make sure you see what i mean, especially the two ribbons of engraved gold undulating along the underside of the handle.
I should thank Coop publicly because he was kind enough to consult with me privately before I posted this image. He gave it a thumbs up so I figured it was OK. It's so weird - after I stare at an image, putting it together on the computer etc. for so long I totally lose objectivity and it all starts to look like crap to me. That's when I need a Super-Coop consult. Thanks, man!
Back to the knife and the beautiful engraving. Ahhhh..... just look at it. Since there's not much to say, I made the picture extra big.
BTW, Brian considered my first version (below) and had some suggestions. I agreed. He's got a great eye so I'm paying attention. It was about the light background which, in this design oriented presentation with the mirror and all that, doesn't pop the gold and therefore the engraving like a black or dark background would. We both liked this image though and thought others might enjoy seeing it. I think of it as the over-achieving photographer's idea of "showing all the details." That's how we wound up with the top image as our choice for the best way to represent such a striking, shocking even, display of gold. Yup, ...and now it's going to it's new home called abroad.
