MrPurple, a fellow formite, has asked that a brief on the collab knife ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265937 ) be written since the thread has become so large. I can understand that. It is a lot of pages and has been going on for a few years.
Well, it is a knife made of a high carbon damascus blade forged by Nick Wheeler and for the handle there is blue bark mammoth ivory, brass/copper mokume bolster (front and back), and solid jade liners. It is a take-a-part design held together by gold screws and all the drilling, screws and threaded tubes were done by tool and die maker Dan Gray (a fellow knifemaker). There are a number of knife makers involved in this project, each with his own task in the making which includes the profile and specific dimensions of blade, custom certificate of origin, sheath making, a write-up, display case, etc. and even a silver smith who has made a bolo from actual left-over parts (mokume, ivory, jade and damascus). Total proceeds from the sale are destined to a charitable cause, yet undetermined. Except for the bolo maker and the display case maker all makers are knife makers either full time or otherwise. The jade was sliced out of raw rock into rectangles by a lapadary. The two liner pieces were then thinned and profiled by machine and by hand by yours truely.
Here can be seen some of the handle work and the CM154 template blade Dan made for us to work the handle material on and also shown is the bolo that Harry Nickerbocker (the silver smith) made ( http://www.knivesby.com/collaboration2.html ).
Thank you MrPurple for suggesting the brief.
