Briefcase cinch straps

Do the cinch straps actually work on the briefcases? I don't always need so much depth and bulk but appreciate being able to expand or contract the thickness as needed.
 
Yes, you can tighten them if you have a low volume load and make it a little less bulky. They also take some stress off the strap and buckle that secures the flap, so it does not have to take all the weight.
