Where can I get a Ka-Bar with a sharpened swedge? I had one as a teenager but lost it, now I'm getting back into ka-bar's but apparently they took away the sharpened swedge on all models?

Some states have laws that prohibit "double edged" blades. Maybe thats why they stopped, IDKFS ???

I believe in a recent post, Toooj confirmed this was the reasoning; correct me if I'm wrong. He also said use a file if you want it :D

I do agree that they should be brought back specifically on the 7" reproduction WWII KA-BARs which are stamped with the USMC,ARMY, etc stamps as it gives them more of an authentic and nostalgic appeal. I say leave the rest as is and bring the swedge grind on these models.

The only other suggestion I could think of is to make all KA-BARs with the secondary edge and for the ones going to the states with the "double edge" statutes, just have some made with a false grind as the ones being made now are. The 7" model I have from 8 years ago is double edged, and when i got a 2nd one recently, I actually thought it was defective!! LOL

Yeah, that's the reason alright. Some states don't like it, but I'll be honest, they are easy to do yourself. I used a Lansky to sharpen the swedge on one of my 1217's and one of my BK7's. Looked factory. I got rid of them a while back, but they were razor sharp. Just a suggestion.

But the states don't prohibit the importation of double edged knives do they? Just the possession out in public or concealed, and if you're carrying a Ka-bar around it's not likely to be concealed. I agree with Spydie Fanatic, they should keep some sharpened swedge models.

The ones they used in WW2 had sharpened swedges.

I guess I'll see about sharpening it myself. But as I asked above, is there anywhere online that I can still buy the ones with sharpened swedges? Stacked leather with a sharpened swedge, that's what I'm looking for.

Not sure, I'm not a lawyer. Just what I've been told. I know some places have quirky laws that don't make sense, so, I leave it up to the cats and kittens in charge.

damn lawyers!! i read something in the SOG forum about their creed blade being changed due to russian laws. companies need to cover their butts but i think with internet sales being so popular loopholes in regional laws are easy to get around they should just produce it sharp and go with it.

Also is kabar even standard issue any more in the US military? I was under the impression Ontario has had that contract for a while. I believe many in their SP line and combat issued models come sharpened. I have their SP6 fighter which at 8" of 1095 does have a sharpened swedge. I also own a 1211 and 1217 besides appearance i wouldn't say not having a sharp swedge makes it any less of a knife for what i use it for.

The swedge is nearly there already. It's almost an edge - I don't think you'll be spending more than 30 mins sharpening 'er up.
the 1217 I used to have and the d2 extreme both came with swedges, that looked like they used to be sharpish - then were merely blunted on a sander.

I think some LE and lawmakers believe some techniques in knife fighting - backslash or reverse slash? - are quite dangerous...leading the prohibition of the double edged knife. I live in CA so...apparently I not supposed to buy/own Big Brother.

No, Kabar does not currently have a government contract. They can't produce the quality of knives they want, for the price the gub'ment says they should, so, no contracts, but I guarantee you, every PX/BX from here to Bagdad, has a Kabar in the case. They don't have a contract, but they have a NSN, so, now worries, our lads and lasses can get some Kabar goodness, for cheap.
