Hey Hogs
I've heard of people using oils to bring out handle colors, like those in snakeskin or tigerhide
I have a feeling this FAT warden would take on a whole new look

I also have a new muk le with blue g10 but it looks whitish/faded in the grooves

I have a sneaky suspicion that a little oil will blend everything together?

I just wanted to first ask if anyone has any experience
whats safe to use
before I go dipping my busse's in melted butter or motor oil

thanks

I wouldn't do it if they are safe queens bro! I feel that with linen micarta and snake skin, the less oil the better. The colors won't fade or dull as quickly if you keep them oil free. However, if you plan on using them, just go for it!!!

I'm with snwbrdr202, I've heard not to oil snakeskin. I think tigerhide may be acceptable though.

Mine are all users and I rubbed a little mineral oil into a couple of brown canvas handled knives. Darkened them up nicely.

Agree with snwbrdr.....if queens, let them be.

However, if users, let the oils from your hands penetrate them over time. They will darken with use...no need to fast track it.

If you're set on oiling, good ol' mineral oil. On the blade & the handle. Not that I haven't tasted my share of gun oil, but mineral oil is meant to be ingested so other than a little diarrhea from ingesting too much, it can't be too bad.

I used mineral oil on ontario and esee grips before and it darkened up. After a days use the oils was gone. Now i just leave them be.

A good way to see what a handle will look like oiled is to test spot it with plain water. If you don't like it, let it dry or pat dry with a paper towel. If ya do, let it dry/pat dry and then oil.
I prefer mineral oil. Non toxic, easy to apply and reapply as needed, cheap...and soap, warm water & a toothbrush gets it off easily if you change your mind and want it back the way
it was. :)

I have oiled them before and not liked it as much as with out the oil.I scrubbed the scales with Dawn and hot water and it took it back just like it was before oiling.

Not arguing but where was it said not to oil snakeskin? Why? As u812 said. A little dawn and hot water with a scrubbie and you can never tell they were oiled I say oil them up! It wears off with time.

I use mineral oil on some of my G-10. Helps to get rid of the whiteness you mentioned in the original post. I bought some Fiebing's leather dye to experiment on some of my micarta handles but haven't had the courage to test it out yet.

Be careful if you use the Miltec-1 on micarta, from what I can tell it is permanent or very close to it on faded G10.It may soak in and not wash out.It is made to soak into steel.

I've never heard that either. I won't, but that's because I think the colors pop in Snakeskin micarta much better without oil, but I doubt it it would hurt snakeskin any more than any other micarta...which is not at all.

I think that the best micarta to oil is Tigerhide. It really darkens and adds contrast to the material. :)
With the exception of the Leaner Meaner LE, and the FBM Bowie variant, all here are with mineral oil.

Not sure what oil was used here. The Custom Shop oiled the handles. Whatever it was, it's worn off now. :D

I tested this FBM Bowie variant with water to see the difference when I took these pix. Oil makes it look just the same...but I decided later that I liked the linen TH better "dry", so I washed it off. :)

Drool! Ok what a display you have there!
Mineral oil or not those look good.
I like mineral oil but now only keep unused knives oiled. My users are un oiled but oils from my hand and whatever keeps things looking good. Well the blades get a light coat no matter what.

+1  Jeff said it right. I have used oil many times on micarta and Dawn and Hot Water WILL MAKE LIKE NEW!!!

That ASH is one of the best looking knives I've seen Jaxx! Thanks for posting that.
