As we don't have Silver Birch trees native over here the only ones I see are ones people have planted on private land etc. With this being the case, I haven't burnt Silver Birch since I was a kid back in England.
Anyway today I passed a couple of Silver Birch outside an old folks home and couldn't resist geting some bark for old times sake.

While I was outside I figured I'd check on my rat trap under the shed....remember that smart rat that kept giving me the slip......turns out he wasn't so smart after all !:D

Have you ever tried the misch (SP?) metal rods? I think they work great for the type of stuff that you do.

Thought I'd share a pic of my most successful trapping ..........

That's awesome, LOL...your rats look cuter than mine, I'd feel bad about killing those !:D

Yeah tried the Misch.....I find it harder to control the sparks though !

Those are Mice ........ the Rats in So-Cal carry guns and drive low riders ............. ducking for cover ...........

The Misch rods are definitely harder to control. I try and keep the knife spine pretty sharp. I think the heavier sparks work better on dry tinder vs. the LMF type ...... which work great if there is an accelerant.

Ok ok ok....... whats the last thing to go through that rats mind before it died?:D

This little bastard is pissing me off. Smart ass mouse :D :

Hi pitdog, as you know, silver birch is very poplar here.

A while ago I saw a post of yours saying you'd seen a rat, good result you've had!

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but if you've seen one, then there's more...
Once rats see a dead rat in a trap, then they'll avoid that particular looking trap and bait.

I don't know why I'm writing all this because I'm sure you know..

You must find any and all rat holes.
Lift up things and dig, get your dogs on the case!
People scoff at jack russel's, but they're a game dog that doesn't need to be taught how to chase and kill.

Plug the rat holes with flaming newspaper and then use the exhaust off your chainsaw to smoke um out! The dogs will clean up when the rats bolt.

A variety of techniques must be employed.
Some countries in the world (with oppressive rules) won't allow ferreting.....in England we do allow it.

Or you could bait up an area for a week or so, then shoot the rats with an air rifle.

Hey buddy, I guess you missed my recent post, I caught a second rat but it was only caught by it's back end and still full of fight. I dropped it out of the trap and my Jack Russell finished it off very quickly ! As you rightly mention there is very rarely just one, I'm hoping I caught this pair quick enough before they reproduced....time will tell !

I saw that post and could just imagine Snicker shaking the crap out of that rat!

You should get a book called "Tales Of A Rat Hunting Man", it's funny and very informative.
Here's the author Brian Plummer with Richard Whitely

Certainly for where I live, I reckon Jack Russel terriers and a lurchers are very useful working dogs.

Sadly, some countries won't allow lamping, but in England it's legal.

I'll certainly look for that book, thanks !

When I lived back in England we had a couple of Bedlington terriers, man they were like lightening and if it moved they'd catch it and kill it. One would even flush Pheasants into the air and then follow them till they they landed exhausted and then get them.....amazing to see !
