Bringing my EDC to work...

Hello all,
I just got a new job working at a small bakery and deli in the middle of butt-phuck no where and i want to bring my 4" fixed blade to work but there are some problems:

1) I can't seem to justify bringing it; i really don't think i'll need it (even tho the first day i had to cut up a big box with a bread knife),

2) My Boss is very easy going but i don't know if she is a sheeple or not- i know she'll ask what i would ues it for- the problem there "see above"

3) I'm working with the public all the time and i don't want to scare the old ladies who just came in for a loaf of bread- it's illegal to carry a knife in Canada if it's covered up; it has to be showing

The only reason i can think of to carry my knife at work is becaues there is nothing but farms around the store so if something bad happened im on my own- not that i would try to fight someone and risk my life to stop a robery, but if my life was in danger i would ues it. But i don't think that my boss would think that would be a realistic reason for being armed at work (also by telling her it is for SD purposes makes the knife a weapon NOT a tool)

So, if anyone one has any advice, or sugestions to get around the 3 reasons above- please le tme know.
Thanks alot

Keep it in your car and just have mid-sized Swiss Army knife in your pocket while working. Probably more useful anyway and it won't frighten anyone if you take it out. Everyone know what one looks like. If you're working with people or serving customers that you think might try and kick your ass (I hear people and eat too many pastries can get mean), then just stick a kubaton in your pocket too.

sound like good idea, i know full well how to use a kubaton too, (he only bad part is that i lost mine school a few months ago, and there hard to find in Canada, oh well, im getting a credit card soon, so i'll just get on one online)

thanks, i never actually thought od just carryig a SAK and kubaton

You definitely shouldn't try having that on you at all times while you're in the store since you work with the public. While you're in the store, you shouldn't carry it on you, and put it in the back room or a drawer or something.

If your boss is easy going, I don't think it'd be a problem. If you bring it once, and she doesn't like it, don't bring it anymore. I think a good enough reason for carrying it is "just in case you need to cut something." See if that answer satisfies your boss enough. If you're really new on the job (first week or so), you might not want to try it until everyone knows you a bit better.

Where would this knife be kept on your person? Would it be hanging off a belt? Would it be concealed with a shirt or apron?

For cutting up boxes and such, you could carry a folding utility knife-- usually comes with a nylon belt sheath with spare blades. I don't think anyone seeing that on your belt would think twice about it.

As for pocket stick substitutes, I like metal flashlights, steel pens, carbide-tipped scribers, those little pen-like diamond pocket knife sharpeners, certain of the more robust felt-tipped markers, and, cheapest of all, a steel turnbuckle (with two big eye-bolts) from the hardware store. Also notice that your folded utility knife is a pocket stick.

Screwdrivers are awesome, too. Maybe a bit conspicuous though.

And the flashlight is good for when the lights go out, too! :)

As the new guy on the job, be very circumspect, don't make waves until you know they trust you, and see what the others may be carrying. You might be surprised -- or you might hear someone gasp when you pull out a Victorinox Classic.

Simplest solution:

1, leave the EDC in the car. You might need it on the way home or to work.

2, buy a good fixed blade that can be used at work for food prep and/or utility and leave it there. Mechanics leave their tools at work, no reason you can't, right? If the boss says anything just let her know that you'd rather use your own as the ones supplied are not up to par.

knifecenter.com has these Ontario knives for $3.95 ea.

Take 'em home once in a while to sharpen or sharpen 'em at work on your break.

I'd say to look into some nice folders of a decent size to fit your needs and fill the void of not being able to carry a fixed blade. You'd be surprized at how a really nice quality folder can replace the need of a fixed. Plus they are compact and concelable.

Now you have your utility tool and you may come to enjoy it more (no quilt or uneasy fillings about carring it, becuase nobody knows it there).

Keep in mind a pocket stick in Canada is a weapon, if it's in your pocket it's concealed. At least with the knife you have a legitimate reason for having it on you (cutting boxes). If you really want to go the kubaton/pocket stick route a flashlight would probably be the safest legally. NEVER tell anyone either the knife or the stick is for defense...

Yes, the flashlight makes a nice pocket stick, especially the sturdy little "tactical" models. Those are pricy, though. There is a pretty cheap Dorcy model at Wally World called the Metal Gear, and it's very sturdy, thick anodized aluminum. Has a tactical feel without some of the features and minus the price tag.

I worked in a bakery one summer. I can't think of a work related reason you would need a fixed blade. With a folder you could claim to cut open boxes, zip ties, plastic bags...all the non food work. Just tell the boss, you don't want to contaminate the work knives (bread knives etc) with cardboard etc. Also cardboard cutting dulls kitchen knives and is dangerous. So your reasons to carry a folding knife are cleanliness and safety. ;)
